NEW SIGNING SHOULD BE ANNOUNCED TOMORROW (THURSDAY)

From the Post....

Bristol Rovers are set to make their first signing of the January transfer window on Thursday, the Post understands.

Darrell Clarke is believed to have been in negotiations with an "experienced" player over the last 72 hours and that a deal was"almost 90 percent done" late on Wednesday afternoon.

The Post understands that the player in question is not Cambridge United striker Rory Gaffney and Clarke was this afternoon being linked with a move for Shrewsbury Town midfielder Liam Lawrence, who is a former Mansfield United team-mate of the Bristol Rovers manager.

Rovers have yet to officially confirm who their target is but a deal is expected to be finalised before they face Barnet at the Hive on Saturday and could be announced as early as Thursday afternoon.

Liam Lawrence would be a great signing he's had 4 promotion and played in the Prem and has 15 caps for Rep. Ireland

Agree but do we need another CM? It wont be a loan as he is a regular 1st teamer in a league above us. Is he better than what we already have in CM? Clarke, Mansell, Lines and Sinclair. Signing Lawrence wont just be for 6 months. It will be for longer and at his age, preferring him over what we have is a big gamble and would mean the end for 1 of the current 4 we have in the summer.

Dont take my last comment as im moaning as I think he is a good player with bags of experience. But is he better than what we got?

Not a dig you dude :emoticon-0148-yes: :D that other forum where they moan about everything:D much better them what we got IMO he's got 500 games under his belt, 15 caps for Eire premier league experience :emoticon-0148-yes::D

I know it wasnt at me my friend <ok> I was just saying im not moaning. Im just unsure if he is better than what we have. Some of our players are undropable

Yeah the whole has played well when selected. Maybe someone could be on their way out then? Just a thought

Mansell I would guess is more at risk but thats just because of age. But I hope we keep him as he has been awesome these past few games. He got bags of experience too and he lifts spirits and morale at the club. He is a leader and leaders we must keep.

Ollie is not really a regular but when he has had a chance he has done really well. He is young so age is on his side and he will get better.

Sinclairs work rate is brilliant and I hope he stays.

Lines has got experience, yes not as much as Lawrence but I think all these 4 players have lots to offer us and all get on well with each other.

I have no doubt that Lawrence is a good player. But maybe his wages could get us a better Keeper or Forward? Do we need another CM at the moment?

Mmmm if I didn't trust DC I'd be a little concerned about this signing, for the reasons given by CJS above.

However, someone like Lines could be on their way out and I've always liked Lawrence as a player - plus DC has a knack of proving doubters wrong!

Lawrence is buddies too with DC as they played together at Mansfield <ok>

Lines has a lot of skill but I find his work rate is not always that good. I have to be honest and admit that I know nothing about Liam Lawrence but if his skill matches Lines level and his work rate is better then maybe lines could be moving on. He does not appear to have played a vast amount of matches this season and yes I do know that he has been injured, but his pace of playing always seems to be slowing the game down when a quick ball played could have given us the advantage of numbers in attack over the defending side

Looking on the Shrewsbury web site, there's no mention of the move on there but it does say that Mansfield supporters would like him back, Shrewsbury have signed 2 midfielders today if that offers any encouragement

According to radio Bristol Liam Lawrence set to sign today. Cambridge have closed the door on Rory Gaffney joining

Are they trying to force a higher transfer fee. Also notice that Shrewsbury have released 2 strikers on loan maybe Derry is hoping that Shrewsbury will try to sign him which could possibly help them in a promotion bid as he wouldn't be scoring goals for us
