I see that Terry Paine is to be the guest of honour at Saturday's memorial game.

As he played a major part in my earliest Saints memories, I did a search on him which led me to this article

For those who also have fond memories of the great Terry Paine, you may find it an interesting read. Here's an excerpt.
"From the time Paine made his league debut for the club in 1957 to the time he was released in 1974 the club played 735 league games. Paine played in 713 of those. Incredible"

He was never dropped in the seventeen seasons he played for Saints.
 
Read something that said in his years at the club, there was a period of 7 years where he did not miss a single game. Sadly he was well before my time but either way, a true Saints legend.
 
I've just read the article in full and it's brilliant; it even mention the game I went to (god I am old). It's amazing to think that a second tier player played in the 66 world cup; even more amazing that he only got his medal last year or so.

My first game was vs Man U in 1968 so I had the pleasure of watching him for a good number of years - sadly too old now to remember most of them!
His ability to find space wide on the right and draw a cross into the box onto probably the greatest header of the ball I have ever seen, Ron Davies was fantastic. In modern times he would have been Beckhamesk in ability
His number of games is all the more wonderful begause in those days it was a mans game where a left back wouldd try and put his winger into the stand early in the game or at least kick a chunk out of you - no diving and rolling around in agony in those days

I have been very fortunate in that I was able to watch and play football against Terry Paine. The same with his compatriot John Sydenham.
He was an excellent footballer and a gentleman on and off the field. Strangely I played against Terry in my first ever competitive game of football. I was probably about 12 at the time he was probably 14/15. I have met him on and off many times over the years he is always polite and helpful. As I said a real gentleman, a first class ambassador and excellent servant for Saints!

I can believe that.

The old gym was magic. I remember getting a kicking of a young franny benali when he was about 14 or 15; and he was a winger then!

Of course it's personal choice. I was just trying to make te point that my personal choice would be for him to stay and maybe Terry could convince him, but it's not my life.

For the record, if it was at my club, I'd rather be a one club legend like my skinnier
brother :)
