Hmm a CB that is covering at RB?....sounds like someone that we need atm... Seriously though, I think that he is at least as good as Callum Chambers was when he broke into the first team...I say get him into the first team squad Ron.
Maybe he's not making the grade or the other keepers are better than him. Apparently his contract is only until June 2016 so maybe we don't intend to extend it and are letting him try other clubs. I wouldn't imagine there is too much wrong at this level as Josh Sims only extended his contract at the beginning of the month. I'm assuming that's his Dad tweeting and you know how they can get (Jack Cork).
McCarthy took the correct choice in going to a L2 club, he has been playing every minute and seems to be growing as a player. Southampton will soon have around 6 players that could have a future at the club that will stagnate if not included in the first squad or loaned out. Hoping that the club could do a deal with a couple of L2 clubs that have a positive manager like the Wycombe manager so these lads can spend the rest of the year on loan.
If they're good enough, they are old enough Beef, Chambers was given his break in the team at RB and I have no doubt that Jason would be up to the job.
McCarthy is a cb. He played rb at the start of his career like many of our cbs do. He then moved into the middle. He is getting regular games at Wycombe. Why bring him back? I just don't see the point. Nowhere did I say anything about his age.
I know that he is primarily a CB as I believe Chambers is, I really think that he could do a job there as he is doing at Wycombe. He is a top defender and a mature player for his age from what i've seen. This is obviously my personal opinion, but I'm still not convinced that Cedric is our solution at RB.
I see him getting game time in the position the club and him agree is his best position. Is better for him at this time.
Les Reed wants to phone Gareth Ainsworth and tell him to play him there then!.... From Don's link.... "While generally a centre-back McCarthy’s versatility has been important as he has deputised at right-back for much of his loan."
He is still getting more game time then he would here. He has played rm aswell. You can keep on about wanting him here, but playing on loan at Wycombe is better for him.
That's ok Beef, we can agree to disagree, but my view is that we are going to have to trust some of the better young players at some point if our business model is going to work.
I sort of agree, but only if they're good enough. The people we have to trust are the coaches and if they think they're good enough.
Why not also trust Cedric as well though? He's not Caulkeresque after all. He loses concentration and forgets his man at times, but that can maybe be fixed. The rest of his game is quite decent. The way I see it, right now both McCarthy AND Cedric are getting to play nearly every game. If they were both on the team, only one of them would play. Or they might split time, which might be even worse. You compared McCarthy to Chambers, but Chambers hardly plays. Nor do I think he would push aside either Fonte or VVD right now. I think Arsenal (or us if we still had him) should loan Chambers out because he has a lot of potential but his career is stalling out a bit. You know how Wenger is-- buys 10,000 prospects, only a few make it. Now, if McCarthy needs to play at a higher level then perhaps Wycombe is not the right place for him. But he should still be on loan somewhere. For now, he is playing most of the time, Wycombe seems to have a decent track record with youth, and he appears to be happy there so unless something better comes along, I think he should stay there. It's BECAUSE I have faith in McCarthy and believe in him long term that I am willing to possibly lose a few extra games this season for the good of his career. The only way you bring McCarthy back is if you are positive he is better than Cedric right now, and are already prepared to write Cedric out of our future plans. Because next year, or two years from now there could easily be room for both. One at RB and one at CB.
Great article on scouting young boys for football. I particularly like the sub-headline that reads, "Anyone who says they can spot a pro at 5 is lying." I've been saying that to parents for years. http://m.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35054310
Chelsea having most of the possession so far, but still 0-0 after 20 minutes. Fraser has made a good save.
