http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-35066622?SThisFB This kind of story pleases me basically!
This is down to Chelsea as I understand it. My daughter competes at athletics for the Kingston Kestrels who are based in Kingsmeadow, AFC's ground is part of the complex. Chelsea's youth & women's team need a new base and have given AFC a huge wad of cash to move out so that they can move in. This is why AFC can afford to move back to Plough Lane. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...s-Kingsmeadow-ground-youth-women-s-teams.html
Supposedly it has really screwed over Kingstonian who received some compensation but not enough to find a new ground. Also the dog track has now closed I believe. Still a nice story for Wimbledon. No reason for the bastard club MK to exist now.
I thought the same thing. Maybe they should rename themselves? It's a shame about the dogs, I used to have a shared ownership of a dog that ran there in the late 80's. She was a good inside runner ( No 2 Blue ) and won a few trophies. We then kept her as a pet. Great dog.
Used to live a short hop (Worcester Park) from Kingstonians (another hoops, but red, if my memory serves me right); with Fat Boys cafe just outside in the parade of shops I think. Seemed a well run club at the time and a big shame if they're getting screwed over.
Big shame to see the Stadium go. I used to watch speedway there every Thursday in the late 60s and often watched Wimbledon when they were in the Southern League at their old ground just down the road, my brother-in-law was DJ in the Nelson's Nightclub under the main stand. It's a shame this development never happened once Wimbledon hit the big time, it's 30 years too late...
This is disgraceful - would love to see them back in Wimbledon, but not at the expense of Wimbledon dog track.
I used to drink in Nelson's years ago,i knew the owner Bob Barrow.I t used to be banging in there, after Nelson's he opened up a bar in Hampton Court, just round the corner from The Streets Of London pub!Happy days.
To put it blunty, Wimbledon greyhounds has gone to the dogs. It used to be a great night out, especially Greyhound Derby night, but last time I went on an ordinary race night the place was really a dump. The GRA appears to have deliberately let it rot to cash in on it's land development value, the new stadium will be built amongst luxury tower blocks so there'll be plenty of winners as London's last dog track becomes history...
Havent really looked into it Soops, but surely the dog track has a much smaller footprint than a 20000 seater stadium - i.e. they could build those same housing developments themselves and do up their own stadium.
I thought mk dons were the ones that used to play at plough lane, AFC Wimbledon are a newly formed club.. its the fans going back to plough lane not afc wimbledon ..
MK are from the hockey stadium, an entity that should never have been permitted by a weak FA. AFC are the only thing close to the real Wimbledon, now sadly gone.
MK Dons stole Wimbledon because W*nkleman couldn't wait to get into the Football League. There was a Milton Keynes City in the Southern League about 30 years ago but they folded through lack of support. W*nkleman knew he couldn't start from scratch so he bought the Dons knowing Merton Council had stood in the way of a new Wimbledon Stadium in Wimbledon and that was his perfect excuse to move them. Not one of the Football League's finest moments...
