I've currently got heavy strapping on my wrist from playing in goal a week ago, thought it was a sprain but now starting to wonder if I haven't gone and got another fracture to add to the collection, the life of a keeper!!!
Could be worse, look at the state of Sturridge on 120K plus a week over this season and last only available to play about 1 in 4. Stand aside Darren Anderton your title has been taken
I've got a couple of fingers that look like Green's, one of which was from a goalkeeping injury. A couple of years ago the coach of my son's team sent out a text saying that he couldn't take training on the Saturday and would have to cancel unless any of the parents would volunteer, so I wound up taking it. After about twenty minutes I put my foot in a pothole and turned my ankle over, so decided I would go in goal for a seven-a-side session. One of the kids (15 year-olds) hit an extremely powerful shot which I got fingertips to but couldn't save. We got home after training and one of my fingers was very sore, but I was more concerned about my ankle, which had ballooned. I went to the hospital to get the ankle x-rayed and they confirmed that nothing was broken - it was just a bad sprain. I didn't bother to ask them to look at my finger. Weeks later the finger was still painful, so I went back to the hospital and an x-ray revealed a dislocation at the knuckle which would require an operation to fix. I had a pin in the finger for a while, but when it was removed the finger looked pretty malformed and so it remains.
I've been playing in goal in various forms of the game for over 20 years and have sore hands to show for it, there is a special place in my heart for the inventor of 'finger saver' gloves, absolute godsend they are but I wish they had been around 10 years or so earlier!
When I played in goal we only used gloves when it rained, the old green cloth ones that became soaked and useless......
