Some canny folk live in Byker, always reminded me of Monkwearmouth, the pubs, shops and people real nice , Eric Burdon aint bad either.
One of my mates, Larry was brought up in Byker - smashing bloke but he did live most of his adult life in London working on the building sites.
Used to work a lot in Newcastle during the 60's and 70's and Byker/Heaton always reminded me of canny auld Monkwearmouth, there was a top notch Pork butchers and some good fish and chip shops, Not as good as Detta's in Dundas Street tho.
I lived on the edge of Heaton when at uni, in Malcolm Street (next street to the one with Shakespeare in the gable end brickwork), and we used to drink in Byker all the time. I remember a great bit of Geordie hospitality in one of the pubs on Shields Road, there were 4 of us sat having a pint and a chat and some local lads next to us asked where we were from, I thought they were just being friendly and proceeded to tell them Sedgefield, Leeds, Birmingham, Wales, only to then be told, "why durnt yus just **** off back thur". Nice lads.

I'm on the North Yorkshire border. I sound more Teeside than anything. Huge difference between my accent to that 40 miles north.
