The "ghost" who scared away morgue staff A South African man in his 60s passed out after an asthma attack last July. Thinking him dead, his grieving family called a private funeral company, instead of paramedics. After spending 21 hours in a refrigerated morgue, the man woke up surrounded by corpses and started to scream. Two workers heard the noises and panicked. "They thought it was a ghost," said Sizwe Kupelo, spokesman for the local health department, "and they ran for their lives." The entire mortuary team returned together later and freed the undead man.

Billionaire Buys £113m Painting for the Frequent Flier Miles
    by Complex 1:30 mins
(By Casey Taylor / The Daily Buzz) Chinese billionaire Liu Yiqian made headlines earlier this month after purchasing a 1918 painting by Amedeo Modigliani for more than $170 million (£113m) at a Christie’s auction and is planning to charge it to his American Express Centurion card, according to Mashable. Yiqian has already made some other big ticket purchases on plastic, including a $36 million Ming dynasty cup and a $45 million silk tapestry. The former middle-school drop-out turned taxi driver turned billionaire is reported to be worth around $1.5 billion, according to Forbes. “In theory, it’s possible to put a ($170 million purchase) on an American Express card,” American Express spokeswoman Elizabeth Crosta told KVAL. “It is based on our relationship with that individual card member and these decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, based on our knowledge of their spending patterns.” If you’re wondering how you get your hands on an AmEx Centurion (AKA ‘black card’), you’ll need an invitation from the company and be willing to shell out a $5,000 buy-in plus $2,500 yearly to keep the no-limit card. It does earn you points though – Yiqian will be earning a point per dollar on his latest purchase. Valued at 1.9 cents each, he’ll earn the equivalent of around $3,230,000. While Yiqian is coming out the winner in this purchase, KVAL points out the auction house could take a pretty big hit. American Express charges a 2-3 per cent service fee for every swipe of their plastic meaning, at the baseline, Christie’s could get dinged just under $3.5 million for the sale.

Couple who pretended to be strangers after staging car crash caught out on Facebook

A couple who staged a car crash while pretending to be strangers were discovered when the insurance company saw that they appeared in each other’s Facebook profile pictures, a court has heard.
David Ward (30) was the front seat passenger in an Opel Corsa which rear-ended the Volkswagen Passat Lynsey Ivory (27) was driving.
Ward and Ivory of The Beeches, Clonshaugh, Priorswood, Dublin pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to attempting to dishonestly by deception cause a loss to FBD Insurance on dates between July 22, 2013 and January 1, 2014.
Both of them claimed to be suffering injury from the collision but denied to gardaí, who arrived to investigate the crash, that they knew each other.
They were transferred to hospital in the same ambulance during which they continued to pretend to be strangers.
    Injury claim
Both Ward and Ivory later submitted a personal injury claim to FBD Insurance during which they again denied knowing the occupants of the other vehicle.
They both made voluntary statements to gardaí outlining what had happened and stating that the people in the other car were strangers.
Garda Neill Plunkett told Martina Baxter BL prosecuting, that a claims handler with FBD examined both Ward’s and Ivory’s Facebook accounts, having received their claims and noted that they appeared in each other’s profile pictures.
The gardaí were contacted and when officers arrived at Ivory’s home to arrest her for questioning Ward answered the door.
The court heard that if the couple’s claim had been successful they could each have been awarded up to €15,000.
The pair will be sentenced today.
    Previous convictions
Ward has seven previous convictions for offences including criminal damage and theft, while Ivory has no convictions.
The couple have two children and have since married.
Garda Plunkett told Judge Martin Nolan that he had been suspicious of the couple’s claims that they were strangers from his first investigation of the collision on Corballis Road, Donabate on July 22, 2013.
He said Ivory told him she had been rear-ended and the driver of the car Ward was travelling in admitted that he had been speeding around a bend on the road and hadn’t seen the Passat until it was too late.
    Airbags
Garda Plunkett said the damage caused to both vehicles was inconsistent with the account he was given and the airbags had not been deployed in either vehicle as would be expected.
He said Ivory was still sitting in the driver’s seat when he arrived on the scene and she was complaining of neck and back pain. Her passenger, who later transpired to be the wife of the man who was driving the car Ward was in, said she was uninjured.
Ward, who was the front seat passenger of the second vehicle, confirmed his friend’s account of how the crash had occurred.
He was removed from the Corsa on a spinal board and was complaining of back pain.
Garda Plunkett said the couple later submitted separate personal injury claims to FBD and provided medical documentation with their applications.
It was during the processing of their applications that a handler examined their Facebook accounts and spotted the connection.

An Andalusian football player has been handed a one year ban after slapping a female linesman with his penis.
The player was also given a €468 fine for the incident, which occurred during a match between Granada-based Celtic de Pulianas and Gabia CF on November 15.
The Competition Committee of the Andalusian Football Association (RFAF) described the player's actions as "performing a public act of common knowledge which was completely undignified and disrespectful to the assistant referee and the crowd present at the game."

The player's club was spared punishment because they immediately sacked the player.
The offender was attending the Andalusian Second Division match as a spectator, and apparently became so enraged with a female assistant referee's performance that he hit her with his penis.
In a match report, Referee Jesús Lorenzo Rodríguez said the man "invaded the pitch and approached assistant number one and tried to hit her with his penis, which he had pulled out beforehand."
"He was wearing the team’s tracksuit and I recognised him from when I’d refereed in the past," Jesús Lorenzo Rodríguez added.

'Crew Action' Caused AirAsia Plane Crash
please log in to view this image
Sky News – 5 minutes ago

Indonesian investigators say a faulty part and subsequent "crew action" caused the AirAsia plane crash that killed 162 people.
The Airbus A320 crashed into the Java Sea on 28 December, less than halfway into a two-hour flight from the Indonesia city of Surabaya to Singapore.
The system that helps control the plane's rudder - the Rudder Travel Limiter - had a cracked solder joint that malfunctioned four times during the flight and 23 times the previous year, according to investigators.
It meant the faulty system sent the pilots on flight QZ8501 repeated warning messages.
Is is thought they pulled the circuit breaker to reset the system - which also crucially turned off the autopilot and meant they were flying the jet manually, said investigators.
"Subsequent flight crew action resulted in inability to control the aircraft ... causing the aircraft to depart from the normal flight envelope and enter a prolonged stall condition that was beyond the capability of the flight crew to recover," said Indonesia's national transport safety committee.
Warning alarms were "screaming" as the pilots fought to stabilise the plane.
The black box data recorder showed the jet had soared from 32,000 feet to 37,400 feet in 30 seconds before it lost lift and stalled.
Today's final report into the disaster said there were no indications bad weather had played a part - contradicting suggestions at the time of the crash.
    AirAsia: Victims' Stories
Large chunks of wreckage were recovered from the sea in January following a massive international search involving dozens of planes and ships.
Among the victims was British-born businessman Chi Man Choi and his two-year-old daughter Zoe, who were flying to Singapore for New Year's Eve celebrations.
The bodies of 56 of the victims were never found.
AirAsia's chief executive is Tony Fernandes, who is also the co-chairman of football club Queens Park Rangers.
    More follows...
