It is a corruption of monsieur and dates back to the time when Southampton was full of Norman French traders. A fact you would have known if you were to go on one of those historic tours at 1.30 on a Sunday starting from the Bargate. The very lovely Mrs Godders:emoticon-0115-inlov and I went on one last week and found out a great deal.

My understanding of the historical origin was that it was the identification of French invaders and spies who were caught by local militia with their reaction to the call 'Monsieur.!' It's plausible because I can imagine any tactics that might work were used and to this day, people might shout Hey Mush, to a stranger. Your French traders reason is even more plausible though, if less romantic. :)

BTW, the clue to SaintinSerbia not going on a historical tour is in his name. Besides, prior to last Sunday how many dozen had you been on.? :)

Yes, but it can be defused by a cheery, "alright nipper?"
I don't think that anyone under 30 would be aware of this, and would struggle to be offended when the person opposite stuck two fingers up at them- as my wife and I did to each other across the kitchen, when the kids weren't watching, in the manner of Vivian from the Young Ones.

Anyone else think this is a huge game, and indeed huge opportunity, for Gaston? He has done well in both of his recent substitute appearances and will most likely have earned a start tonight. Although that is partly down to injuries and suspension, which means if he fails to impress he may not get a chance to do so in what remaims of his Southampton career. This really could be now or never for him.
 
I wouldn't get too ahead of ourselves yet, it was a good header for Mane but it's what he does on the ground and in training that matters. If he can do it great and he has the added novelty factor.
 
I felt sorry for Gaston, last night.
So important for him to prove he can play in this team, and make a difference, then Ron makes 6 other changes.
Just my opinion, but if you want to see if a player can "do it" in your first team, then you pick the first team, with the trialist standing in for one of the regulars.
Not pick a team made up of 7 second string players.
Still, he showed some good awareness and has two assists in two games.
 
Gaston not getting a chance before now is unforgivable really considering what he's being paid. I simply cannot believe he's not had more chances from the bench. The guy isn't a luxury player either, he puts in a defensive shift. It's a myth that he doesn't. His weakness is giving the ball away cheaply. That isn't something that ever matters if you are behind in the game and out of ideas.

He's not a world beater and will never be. But he's a useful option that we should have been using..
