Off Topic Sat Nav Speeds.

Evening all.
Which is more likely accurate? The Sat Nav speed or the speedometer in the car? The difference is up to 7mph.

Sorry cannot help. I use a different version of sat nav, it comes in a spiral bound book form with lots of pretty colours in it. Heard it might be the next big thing in finding your way around.

 

I thought speed dials in cars were usually 10% above the actual speed.

No manufacturer wants their customers done for accidental speeding. Hence the built in leeway.

 

I'd say the GPS. Digital triangulation is used by Military Equipment for missiles and the likes and is highly accurate. Even with the slightly down graded civilian equipment I would say it is more reliable than analogue gear. Also, as Rhino has rightly said, the analogue stuff is can be compromised by manufactures. It's an opinion rather than any hard knowledge though on my part.

 

Rhino has said it. Speedo's always over read up to 10%. Your GPS is the accurate one

 

Unfortunately, the speed camera is the most important! BASTARDS!!!!!!!!!!

Seems like the safe option is to rely on the speedo.
At one point on today's journey, the sat nav told me the limit was 50 when the road signs clearly stated 40.
I'm on a mission to never get another ticket - speeding or parking - as completely annoying when you get caught. None recently thankfully.

 

Rely on the speedo just to be safe.
Also don't forget you now get a 10 min grace period for on street parking, that'll help keep the PEO's away.

As stated, the speedos are always optimistic by up to 10%, particularly at lower speeds. Watch out for the latest money-spinner, the new speed/red light cameras popping up all over London. The old 'Gatsos' are being completely replaced by new 'SpeedCurb' digital cameras and they are also being newly fitted on many junctions specifically to catch those who speed up to beat the red light. Pity there isn't some sort of road side camera to catch those idiots who still insist on using their mobile phones whilst driving. What's so urgent that it cannot wait?

 

The sat navs measure from space and do not take into account curves, hills or traffic lights!

Yes, within reason, however, over here in Oz, Ive heard that they are set about 3 to 5% above but as 'durbar' has said, various things come into play.
If you've fitted slightly larger sports wheels, they can affect your actual speed reading compared to your speedometer.

Example - My daughter fitted 20inch mags & wheels to her Suzuki Swift, which came standard with something like 15 inch, so there is a big difference
which will no doubt give a wrong reading on the speedo.

If your motor came standard with say, a 1.2 size engine ............... and now you've fitted a turbo or a larger engine, the calibration will be out.

Summary - I'd be inclined to trust the car reading over a after market product.

Thanks Sooper. I did not know that but as part of my mission, I slow down and catch the red. What can't wait for 90 seconds?!

 

that's unusual for a female, they normally have the map upside down for starters!

 

How do any of those effect the measurement of someone's current speed? Your comment makes no sense, or are you being jokingly sarcastic?

 

I think it measures distance covered between a set of points although I could be wrong
