Actually, you know what, I might take that back. I see Toby and VVD as very similar, ball playing defenders. Perhaps they need someone a little more industrial playing alongside them.
Yes, I heard Toby used to constantly reassure Jose after big skirmishes at corners that his hair looked great. And we all heard Yoshi's pre-kick off comments on the depth of Jose's soulful eyes.
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/opinion/sport/chris-sutton-dont-condemn-virgil-6605105 Chris Sutton defends VVD against criticism for his recent comments about learning more in 5 matches in the EPL than he did all the time he was at Celtic. May be right, but Virgil could have been more tactful even though he no doubt thanked Celtic as well. Sutton makes a very valid point about VVD having to learn not to wander as much as he did in Scotland and having to maintain his concentration.
I've little doubt VvD didn't mean to demean Celtic at all, but he told the truth about Premier Scottish football in comparion to English. How is he supposed to be subtle and nuanced on Twitter. ?
Virgil's lack of concentration is a recurring theme in Chris Sutton's comments about him. He said much the same during Celtic's last qualifying match for the CL, when he also said that Southampton must have more money than sense for paying more than £10 million for a player who was unproven outside the Scottish Premiership. I think Virgil has answered those criticisms pretty well, particularly in our last two games. If he continues to step up in that way we'll have a gem on our hands.
I accept VVD has been signed to defend, but not much has been said, about the run from the halfway line, when the Chelsea midfield stood off him, waiting for him to pass the ball. The way he just ran between them, exposing their back four, was one of the reasons I was so keen for us to sign him. Really want to see more of this, but with a better end result l
Did that a lot for Celtic. His reputation is that he plays the ball out of defence, sometimes quite literally all the way into the danger areas of the opposing team. Who'd have thought one of his early opportunities of doing so in the PL would be against Chelsea.?
