What's that place like, ODB.? Saw it on Street View the other day while looking for something else.
it's great. It has a good selection of vinyl, from rarities (priced accordingly) to cheapoes at 99p for an album. I got tubular bells for £1.99! They have a range of music from pop/cheese to soul, reggae, classical, and jazz.
They also sell things called Compact discs, but I don't think they will ever catch on.
my system is the linn axis turntable, Linn basic arm with ortofon cartridge, and linn index speakers. the amp is the A&R Cambridge A60 (before they became ARCAM)

Well vinyl in a car has issues (yes I know it's been done).
What's great about old Hi-Fi gear now is you can often buy the stuff you couldn't afford as a youth from eBay etc. My Mitsubishi LT-5V is a thing of wonder and joy. You're right about the relative cost of LPs in the past though, when first employed I could afford 1-2 a month at full price. I think it all added to the respect we gave those objects of desire. Then again I think we forget how expensive CDs were in the 80s as the record companies took us for fools.

I am still using my Garrard SP25 deck and Richard Allen Pavane II speakers and I have a 30 year old Cyrus amp that is still going strong.
To my great shame I do have a substantial CD collection which I play through a Marantz player which is ok.
Looking on eBay some of my vinyl is now far too expensive to risk damaging by playing it.
I had a A60 Cambridge. Great amp. Gave it to my brother with I upgraded and he used it for several years. It is now stuck in a bedroom on top of a pile of junk. I see it almost every time I do a bit of work there [I'm fitting out his house on an occasional basis when I have time]. Makes me wince to see something of that quality being wasted.

Yes, CDs in the car are good although one could have too many of them lying around. Back in the day [I hate that expression] I used to buy the album and a blank cassette. I'd play the record when I really wanted to listen to it and play the now recorded cassette in the car or if I wanted a bit of background music. These days I'm in the slow process of recording all my albums to the computer and making reasonably high quality mp3s with them. Although I don't have a CD player in a car now I did use to burn the tracks to a blank and play them in the car CD player. Now I just put the mp3s on my Phone and go from there. Just looking at the Samsung right now, I haven't got much music [actually it's mainly Goon Shows and radio adaptations of Patrick O'Brian novels]. but there is Jack Bruce - Harmony Row, Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left, and Dave Brubeck - A Cut Above, so we're not doing too badly.
On the subject of your Mitsubishi LT-5V. Isn't that the vertical standing one.? I always found them interesting. Nice to know that another bit of good kit is still going strong. I love the fact that superbly made stuff really does last, even longer than it was designed to, in a lot of cases. I occasionally look out for the Revox B795, just for curiosity. But then I'm always curious about getting a piece of Hi-Fi gear with the Revox name on it. Preferably an A77 or B77 tape deck. I can dream.

Find a good second hand record store St.G. And it's about time you upgraded from that SP25. I had a MkIII version and although it looked after my records, there was a leap in quality when I moved up to a Pioneer PL12D [like everyone did.!]. About 5 years ago I found an old Goldring GL75 down the recycle centre. I paid £2 for it and rebuilt the pickup arm when I got it home. It plays beautifully, built like a tank, and is in really good condition. It had been dropped to the bottom of a skip and the casing around it broke. I glued that back together. It's upstairs in an old setup I have integrated with one of my PCs. I actually do all my LP to Mp3 recordings with it.
Of course you can have CDs St.G, and Marantz players always were pretty good. I have as many as half a dozen CDs myself.!
Thought I'd leave it until after the match to write this. Just an update on the progress of LENR. If all goes well the first industrial manufacture of LENR units will begin at the end of February 2016. Pre-orders are running at US$30B [yes 30 billion]. These would be commercial units of around 250kW and upwards, but because of recent exceptional progress, new designs have been developed and these are much more suitable for domestic installation. At the moment they are undergoing reliability tests. To put all this into perspective, first domestic units should cost around £2500 but will cost about £25-50 per year to run the home energy requirements. Unit costs will fall of course.

The LT-5V is indeed vertical, whicjh freaks some people out. I used to have a LT-10v which was a bit rubbish, the LT-5V takes a proper SME head which currently houses a Goldring Electra cart. I still regret about 2yrs ago not going for a Revox linear, since then I've not seen one go for anything but silly money.
I appreciated the convenience of the LT-5V way back when, because it required little space to work in and was easy to keep clean and fairly dust free - dust, the bogeyman of turntables and records. I was always unsure of its sonic capabilities though, but if you're putting a Goldring Electra into it then it must be pretty damn capable. I assume the sound is impressive.
About the B795, yeah they are out of reach, sadly. I saw one a serious one, few years ago on ebay, but it eventually went out of my range, and I'm not selling the Sondek/Ittok/Troika combo to finance anything, ever.

Personally, I think this stuff is more important than football. It's is going to be the major goodbye to using fossil and radioactive nuclear fuels. That's worth 5 minutes attention.
Initial unit prices bandied about is two and a half to three thousand US dollars. Now there's no point in making the conversion anymore than saying pounds for dollars. As with anything that starts anew, manufactured unit prices will come down over time. Cost of fuel per year is very low and only needs replenishing once every 6 months or so. A cautious price per kW is reckoned to be around a 100th of present power generation average, so basically it puts all other technologies into the bin.
Having said that, Govts, especially ours, may tax it to the hilt. However, it is non-polluting, non-radioactive, and uses base ores in plentiful supply which (and I don't quite understand this bit) can be re-energised. Watch this space, I suppose.

That's a notch above anything I've ever had !
My peak was a Sony PSX75 with a Biotracer arm but the electrics went awol eventually. The LT-5V is what I'd call good mid range, also nice to set up with no anti skate bias to factor in. If you ever take the back off one they're actually pretty basic, I like the use of string to move the arm! The Goldring was a happy accident as I've amassed a lot of carts by buying spares or repairs TTs from eBay. It just sounds best with my current setup and copes equally well with Vaughan Williams, The Cure and Fairport Convention.
Did EVERYONE in the 70s own a SP25 ?
St Godders post reminds me I had a MKiv which was the belt, not idler, drive version.
