What’s the point of a long transfer window in the summer, is there one?

Apart from one or two clubs, us being one, very few deals are done until the final week, indeed the final day. Its a game of cat and mouse, bluff and counter bluff and unsettled footballer’s.

Look at Spurs, they want to keep Modric, Chelsea want him and he wants to go.It could drag on for a few more weeks, who benefits?

N’Zogbia wants a move and the cat and mouse game continues, who benefits?

If the window lasted from say 1st July to 1st August what difference would it make?

I am open to opinions either way, I just don’t get it.

I don't think there should be a transfer window full stop. As we found out ourselves last season, get a lot of injuries outside of the transfer window and there's nowt you can do about it.

There never used to be such a window, although there used to be a ban on transfers towards the end of the season.

However the 'big' wealthy clubs used to sign the best players on a 'whim' throughout the season and I think it was felt that a transfer window would help even things up
    - obviously a misjudgement!

International competitions for 1, World Cup, European Cup, Coppa America etc etc. an example which may not happen.

Harry wants a creative midfielder from the Coppa America, but his hands are tied until the team he plays for gets knocked out, once he ties up that deal, he may let Modric go to Chelsea, Modric goes to Chelsea, Chelsea then have a player surpless to requirements, so Liverpool buy them, Liverpool then have someone surpless to requirements, so we buy them, etc etc all this takes time, and just cant be done in a week after the Coppa America finishes.

Never liked the transfer window think it's a total waste of time as it still benefits the rich clubs who just have to wait till January or season end before they buy who they want, so nothing has changed yet again. As with the 25 man squad rule and in the near future 2012 I believe the financial fair play rules they are being put in to keep the rich teams rich and the rest in the crap.
