Hello, you types. Last Thursday my regular readers allowed me to tip one up in Wales and the outcome left everyone Ebullient with a capital ‘E’ as said beast did it in style. Now, providing there are no objections, I’ll tip another one up across the Severn Bridge. LA PYLE (4.40 Chepstow) – this 4YO filly has her first run for dear old Pip Hobbs here following a ‘transfer’ from across The Channel. She ran 10 times in that fellow EU member state winning twice and finishing placed on 4 further occasions (including on her last run in a valuable €47,000 handicap at Saint-Cloud). Given that profile I’m quite surprised that La Pyle has been allocated a perch as low as 77 for her UK debut. Long term I would be fairly certain she will go hurdling but would imagine that connections will be hoping to inflict some damage on the level first. And in my view this rating of 77 certainly gives them leverage to do this. La Pyle does reappear after a 311 day absence but the yard certainly know how to ready one first time up so I wouldn’t be too worried by that stat. Also said barn of Pip Hobbs is in decent form with 2 out of his last 7 runners obliging (29%). Meanwhile, both of her wins, in France, were when the word ‘soft’ appeared in the going descriptor so the likely ground should provide, the old girl, with no worries whatsoever. An interesting runner with the potential to be a big improver for her new stable. Good luck, pilgrims.
Listowel is off Tuesday and the races will be rescheduled throughout the week and an extra jumps card has been added Sunday with more details to follow.
One stands out today Cartago 14:50@Yarmouth Great victory with Dettori on board at Windsor recently. Also having a look at Zain Emperor in the 14:30@Catterick, might have a go at that. Cheers.
Barney I am very surprised you have not picked up on the point that the Cheltenham winning trainer and son of the first women trainer to train a winner of the winner of the grand national MARK PITMAN has his first runner for 9 years EMILIO LARGO previously at Sir Henry's and some more he his 16/1 with Jim Crowley on top!
I think you mean Mark Pitman, old boy. He did win 5 races for Sir Henry but has done next to nothing since leaving Warren Place (his last 3 runs being especially bad). Because of this though he has fallen down the handicap like a stone so if recapturing his previous form Emilio Largo would unquestionably be right up there – deffo worth a punt, at 16’s, if anyone has reason to believe he will . The big question though is will he recapture his form from 2011/12?!? Not for me today and it’s somewhat eye opening that at Chepstow today, in soft ground, Emilio Largo is going half a mile further than he’s ever done in his life. Will need Stamina with a capital ‘S’ like never before later on this afternoon. The Beckett horse has become quite a hotpot in the race and is now bordering ‘levels’ but I’ll stick with La Pyle though as, to me, she seems to have quite a bit of potential off 77. On the subject of Emilio Largo by the way, people. He was a right rogue when he came up against old boy, James Bond. Not my most fave Bond villain, or seemingly the most ruthless, but not someone to get on the wrong side of, most deffo.
SportingLife.com are reporting an “across the cards treble” for William Haggas – Catterick 2:00 Shaka Zulu 11/8; Chepstow 2:40 Predominance 5/2; Yarmouth 3:20 Farsakh 13/8. I think I can stretch to accepting that... nearly 21/1 for anyone that had it.
Manchester City's recent Champions' League record is pretty dire, but I thought they might be worth a bet tonight (5/6 with Victor, 4/5 generally). I've watched extended highlights of a couple of Juventus games this month, and they look very disjointed all over the pitch, and definitely short of a top-class striker - Mandzukic is no sort of adequate replacement for Tevez. Juve - at least for the present - seem to be suffering from the Liverpool disease; they've spent so many years playing to a system based on a single player (Pirlo) that they're finding it hard to formulate Plan B now he's gone. Could be wrong, of course, and Citeh can always be underwhelming on the wrong day. But this looks the right day to catch Juventus, and there could be clear daylight: I'm thinking City at -1.
Not a great night for the red side also. The fact that Shaw was able to tweet and be positive hopefuly means it is a small fibula injury devoid of surgery. He was starting to look a really top player this season. However,the Premiership looks a way off the best Euro Leagues on tonights evidence...despite what the pundits lead us to believe.
The trainers record at Chepstow is impressive..as was Predominance. A big decision to slice the toys of a beast that cost 155,000 but it appears to be have been the right one..thus far!
