@Stan - the last minute dance was a **** up by both clubs, but for them to suggest that there'd been no dialogue over the summer is a bad joke. Mendes had been on this deal and it was an open secret as to where De gea was going, it was merely a matter of when. Both clubs should have concluded this ealier in the window and United could have called it by saying "its now or never".

A large part of that defensive strength was down to De gea let be right. If he comes back into the side and plays as he's capable of then that may continue, but if his head's not right or if you have to stick with that other plum then you're not going to have the best defence in the league this season mate.

I didn't say there was no dialogue, I said there was no bid til Monday. I think United told Real what price they wanted weeks ago. Real eventually got round to matching the valuation and then ****ed the deal up. What should United have done earlier in the transfer window to force Real to submit a bid at the right level?

Told Mendes that if they didn't conclude a deal by X date, then he'd be staying at United for the season

Why?

If the deal had gone through we would have got Navas as a replacement.

It didn't go through so we keep DDG for another season, the same outcome as telling Real they had to do the deal by X date.

It's not up to the selling club to force the issue.

I'd have thought that was obvious.

To avoid the being left caught with your kecks down on the last day of the window.

That **** up has cost your club £30m

So what we should have said was do the deal by 15th August or he stays with us. They don't do the deal (bearing in mind the deal was agreed and they still didn't do the deal so they clearly had no intention of paying the price United wanted!) and we are better off exactly how? We still have DDG and he has no transfer value, which is the situation we're in now. I think had we set a deadline the same course of events would have happened except that United would not have been able to accept a late bid without going back on what they'd previously said.

I guess it comes down to whether you think Real ****ed the deal up deliberately or by accident. Given this whole transfer malarkey hasn't just been invented I'm leaning towards deliberately!

I'm not sure the club are overly concerned about losing the money from DDG's transfer. It will cost them but not £30million. They're saving money on DDG's wages (anything from £5-£6million) and they'll be able to sign another keeper next summer who will have a year less to run on his contract, although being United we'll probably offer twice what the selling club is hoping for.

Madrid could well have done this on purpose that was my initial reaction tbh.

You're still paying his wages so how have you saved £6m? You've lost me there.

He's still on the same money from his initial contract, £60k a week. The club offered him a new contract, reportedly £200k, possibly £240k per week. Assuming he'll be paid up to around 1st July, that's c.44 weeks of wages.

£60k x 44 weeks = £2.64million
£200k x 44 weeks = £8.8million
£6.16million difference in wages

If he'd signed the contract he'd have a transfer value but it would be costing United £140k a week more than it is now to have him at the club.
 
Problem.... only mancs think real ****ed it up.

We keep getting told he was only on 35k btw.

Utd have lost 20mil and his replacement for the year. Have to pay him same as they paid Valdes for nothing and HOPE he will play for them to make those wages not a total loss.


And yet it's Madrid fault... all their fault. ... but you'd help them fix the issue with computers so real can appeal... but no real ****ed it up...

We denied Suarez his "dream move" to Arsenal (according to the rags <doh> ) and he played like a ****ing demon the next season, so it is possible that Dave can get his head right if he believes in himself.
As you say, though- the whole thing is a complete an shambles.

wat does de gea need?

to play to play in eruos at end of season.... what choices does he have? play and not try very hard?

But if he'd have signed that contract and he still wanted to go to Madrid then you'd have got significantly more than the £30m you were getting with only 12 months left on his deal.

So that calculation is fools gold.

The plain and simple reality is, that unless he does a massive U turn and somehow decides to stay now, then that **** up has cost you £30m.
 
madrid FOLDED on the last day and thier president was looking ike a fool. anyone with a basic understanding of Spanish football politics knows this was not madrid pulling a fast one

utd buggered up good money deal... way over his value plus a player but not acting speedily and tkaing 8 hours to slowly read documents then have a long lunch then re read then a couple whiskys the hold them for a bit longer.

he won't stay... but we will have to see if he plays. i have an open mind but the guy playing now will be twice mugged off if he does... not that he looks any good.

I'm assuming the reason he wasn't played in the run up to this farce was not only because he looked on his way out, but also because his head wasn't right. If he's that sensitive, then he could play, and try, but still be rubbish. I seem to remember it took him a little while to settle at Utd in the first place, so he seems very much a confidence player.

Only signings I could imagine Fergie making were Darmain, Blind, Schneiderlin and maybe Schweinsteiger.

They still need a GK,1-2 CBs, a combative midfielder, another winger and 1-2 strikers.

Not sure about that - I think I'm right in saying Fergie never signed a German (or maybe just one), has something against them by all accounts
 
Real could stick a dustbin in the goalmouth and it would save enough, anyway, given that they spend most of the time at the other end. I'm not sure why they need to be forking out quite so much.

Your whole viewpoint that United have somehow ****ed up is based on United failing to force the other parties involved in the deal to do what United wanted them to do. If that's what you're saying then I agree.

They didn't manage to force DDG to sign a contract so he now has no resale value. DDG didn't sign the contract, that's a simple fact, no "but ifs" about it.

They also failed to force Real to pay the price they wanted for the keeper. They could have just given in and let Real pay a lower fee but they chose not to which I think was the right tactic when you look at the bigger picture.

Personally I think DDG has treated United poorly by not signing a contract to ensure he had a good transfer value. He was happy to join United, happy for United to stand by him when he was dropping crosses and happy to take their money. I think the least he could have done was protect his own transfer value by signing a contract.

Saying United ****ed up is like saying Liverpool ****ed up when McManaman turned them over or Spurs ****ed up when Sol Campbell turned them over.

So it's not a fools gold calculation at all. He refused to sign the contract so he has no resale value. Had he signed the contract he would have a resale value but at a cost of £140k per week more to United. The fact is the contract was offered and it was the player who refused it.
