Full time at 3-0. At least it didn't get any worse, and perhaps if there were any feelings that we'd be OK this season and it wouldn't be a battle, they've been extinguished.

Yes DH,

It's still hard to judge where we are as team though.

Palace was an inept refereeing performance that cost us.

Sunderland were as awful as we were excellent.

We drew with Stoke, think we should of won that one so its a decent guide.

Southampton we were down to 10 men away from home. Tricky to see where we are as a team.

It's quite rare that I point a finger at a single player but today I will.....................Step up Sebastian Bassong!

First minute he gave away a needless foul, resulting in a really good effort on goal, from a team that needed something to give them a lift. Seb handed it to them on a plate. The story of the game was written at that very moment in my opinion.

So important now that we beat Boremouth at home next up. If we don't we then have Liverpool and Wet Sham away after that and could well be rooted in the bottom three by the end of September. This really is going to test Alex Neil's credentials <ok>

In my mind, AN's credentials were always going to be stretched this season. Not saying it is a step too far for him, but it is on another planet for him.
The fact we are still looking to spend as little as possible on players is a factor in our success/failure at this level.

There are other factors of course, such as....
Whittaker, who is prone to errors, be it in defence or like today with petulant fouls.
Bassong making poor decisions
Ruddy, as good as his saves can be, is prone to poor kicks and putting the defence under pressure needlessly (a few times this season already)
The lack of a really top notch left back...Saints had too much joy on that side of the pitch today.

Ronald Koeman is asked about Dusan Tadic's reaction to the foul which resulted in Steven Whittaker's second yellow card.
"I will talk to him about fair play," says the Dutchman.
That from a man who cheated and arguably got Graham Taylor the sack when he was England manager.

You could have added Pelle to that list with his bogus attempt to get a penalty by dragging his foot onto Seb's leg (Seb was facing away from him) and then falling over. Fortunately the ref didn't buy it but Pelle should have been booked for a dive.

That said, however, it could have been worse. Fortunately we now have Olsson returning to LB after the international break, which will aloow Brady to move forward to LW, and hopefully a couple of new signings before the window closes.
