I go into a rage when anyone tells me they are "at Uni.". If that's the standard of their literacy then they should not be at a university or if they are it is probably a second or even a third rate one.

I go to Loughborough University and most people around the campus say it. If overused it can be annoying, but there's nothing wrong with shortening it in conversation every now and then.

Any minute now we'll get someone saying 'and in 2015 this used to be a football forum'.

Bit strong, think there is no harm in shortening things if people know what you mean. I don't tend to go in for "text speak" but will shorten the odd word if it makes sense.

Now acronyms, don't get me started on those. The seed of all evil in the world.

I'm sure you did. I was a mature student so I went to Uni' in the 1990's. My ex-partner went to Varsity, which confused the hell out me for 5 minutes. She was from NZ and they were still loyal to that term.

As for groovy and other such descriptive words, there is an essential difference. They are not truncations, but extra invented descriptive words that eventually went out of fashion. They were the code for the time.

I went to Uni as a mature student in the 90s, but then I was too busy drinking to say the full word. Back on topic, MK Dons is a good draw for us though and I'm confident we'll have enough to go through comfortably

Acronyms have their place though Cardiff, where would we be if we had to refer to people from Portsmouth as caravan utilising nomadic travellers?

I remember in the 1960's people around me saying things like:

"Just get the ball in the ****ing net, Saints!"

    I can't remember the sixties.:azn:

Regarding MK Dons, I've been to more away games at this ground than any other due to our little sojourn into the lower leagues, and have to say it's one of the best. I see that they've put seats into the upper tier now, it may mean a really decent away allocation if they make them available. Stadium MK now has a 30,000 capacity!
