Do you think Martinez thinks 'it was just one of those things' for every goal? The rumours of him being a poor defensive coach were confounded by that little stint on MNF for me.
Funny that he is in your view a poor defensive coach. But had a great record in his first season at the club. In fact he got more goals from our fullbacks and changed our style of play from percentages to playing out from the back Anther coachs club conceded a record amount of goals but that gets overlooked ;-) And then after one defensive mishap this season and one very good finish he is poor? I guess his development alon with the Barnsley setup of Stones from Championship player to what looks likely to be long term England player is a fluke
You evidently disagree. I'm not talking about one game/goal, I'm talking about your entire season, last season. Questions, (not just from me) arose about his ability to organise your defence. I don't think we need to highlight individuals who have been deemed to have done well, that achieves nothing, you defend as a team. Baines drowned at the World Cup and never looked the same after it and Martinez didn't fix that, your defence capitulated, you started the season by shipping 10 in 3 games. All of a sudden his flaws as a coach (which Wigan fans were shouting from the rooftops) were being exposed, after a full year of praising him non stop. I always wondered if he was being treated a little unfairly, he's maybe just working with what he's got and doing his best, but no, he looked a complete mug on MNF mate, Carragher had his pants round his ankles in the opening 5 minutes.
And I pointed out that other coaches have cnceede record amounts of goals but are not pointed out ;-) Baines did perform badly at the WC, but who didn't from that England side? Who then went on to have a 'great season' It's funny that Carragher sees Stones best chance of continue his development by staying at Everton?
I agree with you to a point. Martinez patently isn't a coach who is focussed on defence and only a fool would deny that for a large portion of last season we were pish defensively and he has to be accountable for that fact. Osman said in his autobiography that Martinez doesn't have them practising defending corners for example, which they all thought was odd post the Moyes era, were safety first was the mantra. He should bring in a defensively specialist to work alongside the rest of the coaching staf imo.
Why's that funny? He's guaranteed games at Everton. I'd actually agree with that, despite Martinez' flaws, he still has decent mentors around him. You seem like you want to deflect criticism away from players/Martinez by highlighting other players/managers but it's not my point... You appear to want to change the subject, so let's discuss this 'coach' who's conceded a record amount of goals... go ahead.
He should, I agree. It would probably help you a lot. Don't get me wrong, his attacking philosophy is admirable, he looks clued up in that department and I thought some of his unorthodox methods are refreshing and interesting, but on a thread where you lot are debating who would improve you personnel wise, I think it's worth highlighting a good defensive coach could go a lot further than a player or two, not to mention a hell of a lot cheaper!
I find Martinez incredibly frustrating at times tbh. He's obsessed with 4-2-3-1 and rarely deviates from it, even when it's patently not working. He has us passing the ball in areas where possession means jack ****, and then we run out of ideas and punt one into the channel. His system means that we lack wiodth aside from the fullbacks, having 2 holding midfielders also means that we can lack drive from the midfield, we pass the ball around get it out wide - find there's no overlap, so knock it back inside again, and we try and tread through the centre of the opposition and we've not got the guile to do so more often than not. He's trying to get us to play like Barcelona but with personnel that simply aren't up to the task, a great manager devises a system and method of play that best suits the resources at his disposal. Martinez isn't of that mindset, and to me that makes his 'philosophy' a bit of a vanity mission, and EFC isn't the place to put yourself before the best interests of the club. He needs to launch his philosophy into the bin and concentrate on what's in front of him and how to maximise it's potential.
He's also been accused of having no plan B, you've just put a tick in that column there. I think he'd do well, with some help. That thing he does with Barry is odd, shifting him to LB when Baines goes forward, but it works often enough so like I say, it's interesting to see these new techniques, I'd never actually spotted Everton doing that but I guess that's why I'm not a pundit/analyst. The Barcelona link is funny, I said the same thing to my brother, it looks bloody brilliant when it works though. What do you make of Cleverley? Another Gibson or next level?
Cleverley is a decent midfielder but he's never going to set the puls racing. He played him in the left of the 3 attacking mids on Saturday, but he kept coming inside, so he swapped him to the right - and he did the same. If he's going to play him it should be at the expense of either Barry or McCarthy - both of whom were ****ing mince on Saturday.
I like McCarthy, I think he's a real top player. Cleverley seems to think he's got more time on the ball than he has, if he sorts that out he'll be very good, if not, he'll be another wasted talent. Cheers, good to get a fan's perspective there on a couple of things. Hurry up and buy Evans as well
TBH I would be quite pleased with Evans, I think when he's first pick consistently he's a quality CB.
Carragher had his pants down (Martinez) as a terrible defensive coach....but the pundit who had him on the ropes believes that staying under Martinez is the best for Stones. I dont think you see where basing your points on Carragher falls down
His inference was to stay at Everton where he's guaranteed games (as opposed to behind Terry, Cahill and possibly Zouma at Chelsea), he looked visibly shocked that Martinez offered no explanation for who was to blame. The fact is, goals do go in whether you prepare for them or not, but to just wave it away as if nobody was at fault was schoolboy level stuff. Mirallas was to blame. Just say it. Instead he said some guff about too many defenders and it was unlucky. Yeah, it was unlucky to an extent but most good defensive coaches will tell you to stop the cross coming in, in the first place. Stones is better off playing football, that's the top and bottom of it.
