His Brief & the CPS are in in talks about a guilty plea on a lesser charge in return for a community punishment order. Makes sense and saves alot of money/time on a Crown Court trial.

From a usually reliable source.

Good if true I suppose, I should imagine he just wants it all over instead of dragging it until October.

Tbh, I think he'd be let off with Community Service anyway. Surely if they were going to sentence him to something more serious they would have concluded it by now?

I know of similar cases that have taken 2 years to conclude due to dates being changed etc. And they still were sentenced to 5 months.
 
I don't normally venture over this side but I had to post on this thread.

This guy bottled a member of the public. Whether the member of the public deserved it or not, Barnard has still commited a crime - a crime that SHOULD NOT be punished with just community service.

Can I ask those who have said "good, lets hope he gets the community service" this question.

If the guy that got bottled was your brother/friend/father/someone close to you - and you were still a SFC fan - would you still want Barnard to get community service?

This is not a WUM post or anything, and the Barnard case should not involve footballing rivalry etc, but in my honest opinion, having been on the end of an unprovoked attack once, the guy should be sent down for 6 months.

i think he's pleading guilty on a lesser charge though, so the rumours may not be true
 
I agree with mikecloud to a certain extent. Don't know facts of case so can't comment, but do feel that the correct result should be arrived at independent of who the person is. Barney should not be treated better or worse than Joe Bloggs. I would love him to be innocent and exonerated, but if guilty the injured man is entitled to justice.

Well that's the point in answer to mikecloud, we don't know the facts so we shouldn't say "send him down for 6 months" when none of us were there and know what happened.
 
Its a tricky one - Steven Gerrard punched a guy in a club a few years ago and got away with doing Community service (coaching under privileged kids how to kick a ball - not really punishment if you ask me) - but Barnard bottled a guy. If this was Liam Lawrence or Dave Kitson we were talking about, I would still want to see them get sent down for the mindless violence of the act.

Football does not come into this - this is about justice.
 
Its known to the press that it involved a bottle, Barnard, another guy and injuries that almost blinded the "victim" - i put the word victim in quotations because lets be honest - you only get a bottling if you deserve one - but thats not the point.

Again, this is nothing to do with who barnard is, or what colour strip he pulls on on a Saturday afternoon - this case should be treated as any of us would expect to be treated had we done the same thing. I am sick to death of celebrities getting away with it because of their "status".
 
Barney had a severe injury to his hand...more likely to happen if you hit someone and happened to have a bottle in your hand than if you smashed the bottle and then shoved it in someone's face. When you use the emotive word 'bottling' most people think of the latter scenario, but I suspect the former which lacks intent. Only a guess I know.
 
Lets not get too carried away here. We know so little of the facts. We know a guy was bottled, we know Barney was involved.....that's about it. So rather than acting as judge and jury, of making claims and counter claims. Lets just wait and see what all the facts are. If they are even talking about a different charge one has to suppose there just might be doubt about the circumstances.
Finally I would agree if someone has deliberately glassed someone then let the full wrath of the law come down on them and no pussy footing around.
 
agreed if he did it, he should get just desserts - mikecloud i think what some people on here are saying in light of knowing the facts are that we hope he doesnt go down due to the fact he is a good player, therefore we are hoping its not all true - however if it emerged the full extent of the truth and what has been said IS all true im sure we would all say he is deserving of punishment regardless.

its probably the same if for example it was a mate of yours who did it - you wouldnt want him to go down as you hope it isnt really true, but if it turned out to be true you may still be his mate but you wouldnt exactly begrudge the sentence would you?

Yes! It would've been my fault for provoking Barnard into bottling me, despite the prior knowledge of what a relentless hard b*st*rd he is.

We'd make up and laugh about it over pints in a St Mary's hospitality suite.
 
Glassing someone........provocation........Not sure the two go together!!! Nobody deserves Glassing no matter what the circumstances!!
Again lets not make judgments until all facts known........
 
To be honest Barnard looks and acts like a bit of a wrongun. It would not surprise me if the rumours were true. If he bottled someone he wil/shouldl go down. Unless it was an extreeme case of self defence... which I doubt.

So I pretty much agree with the cloud. I would have thought with CCTV it would be pretty obvious, just goes to show....
 
Agreed beddytare. I apologise if I have come across as judge and jury.

Let's find out the facts presented to the court first. Then whatever the decision we can then state our opinions.

As said already, I have been on the end of an attack in a club, and I assure everyone it was un provoked, which I wouldn't want to wish on anyone.

It could have been an accident which has made it to press more so than any other case of its type because who is involved. Or it was an attack with intent.
Let's await the evidence.

The thing is though that if this was true, it would be because the CPS wouldn't have enough evidence to be confident about a more serious charge in court. He wouldn't get a stiffer sentence to make an example or a more lenient one due to being a well-known personality, it wouldn't be fair. So this isn't about who he is, just the case in hand.
 
Look i love Barney as a player but he did not end up with a heavy duty bandaged hand for the best part of two months playing tiddly winks did he he likes to plays hard on the pitch which is great but off it he should not get involved in such scenarios whatever the circumstances lets hope lessons are learnt no one but no one should be above the law and i dont think that Cortese or Nigel are the types to tolerate to much indiscipline from any player and the bottom line is any person who was to hit any one with a glass or bottle is really not to much of a bloke and any right minded person would expect such a person to face the concequences of such a despicable act

Since you looooove talking about unsubstantiated claims, how about Barnard punched this ex Cage wrestler in the face because of taunts and provocation, with a bottle in his hand. The bottle smashes on impact and lacerates Barnard's hand, as well as the guy's ugly mug. Now, is this an intended "bottling", or a violent reaction to goading from a pissed ****er.

We don't know what happened. Only Barnard knows what happened. Since it's not GBH he's been charged of I suspect that he didn't "bottle" (grab a bottle, smash it on some guys face and rub the smashed bottle in their face) the "victim".

I hope Barnard gets a punishment that fully justifies the crime. That is all I can say on the matter as I do not know the facts. I suggest you take the same view.
