A lot of the stuff McCoist did was awful. At the same time no other manager at our club had to face the pressures he was under. I've said it before, but under normal circumstances neither he nor Neil Lennon would have survived their first seasons if not for external influences.
I was thinking about him yesterday and compared to some of the other charlatans we have paid money out to over the past four years I don't begrudge him his money even if he wasn't the most able manager. He kept things going and did try and protect his players (****e though some of them may have been). Ultimately though someone with McCoist's temperament is much best suited as an Assistant rather than manager. You can't be their friend and their boss.
It's probably fashionable to denigrate him now particularly as Warburton seems a far shrewder proposition, but even now with the names like McMoist and Sally it reminds me of the fear of the Celtic fans every time he pulled on a blue jersey against them. I was there and it was palpable, despite whatever desperate revisionist bravado today's fans come out with. So says the guy who made up a wee cartoon of him on your matchday thread
