    Yes, they should have used sub-machine guns.

    He thinks it is inappropriate for them to march in the first place.

    Considering this tactic has been rejected by Police in Britain, it is obvious that this draconian measure should only be used in cicumstances that meet very strict criteria. I suspect a member of the Policing board should have rather a better grasp on what constitutes 'premature' than some a prejudiced bigot from a family of bigots.

    this is what Gerry Kelly said;

    “I have already raised with the PSNI this morning the premature use of water cannon. A small number of people were involved in the rioting. We are absolutely opposed to the use of plastic bullets in riot situations and have made this clear on many occasions. These are lethal weapons.

    “It is now important that the people who live here in Ardoyne are able to get this district cleaned up and returned to normality. What we don’t need is a repeat of last night’s incidents going forward.”

    He knows that;

    The residents of Ardoyne held a dignified and peaceful protest against the unnecessary and unwanted Orange parade. There were others who decided to apply for an additional parade to enter the Crumlin Road at the same time as the Orange parade was scheduled to pass. This provided a focus for mainly young people from outside Ardoyne to travel to this area yesterday. A small number decided to engage in rioting.

    The whole thing is ridiculous really, with both sides being childish. Do the Orange Order really need to do a parade? No. Do the residents really need to protest against it? No. They all just need to grow up.

    Why's it always a "small number" when quite clearly it wasn't?

    If the police decide that in order to uphold the law, they have to escalate the force in use, then they are well within their rights to do so. What are they meant to do, just stand there and get pelted with rocks, petrol bombs and laugh it off? Standby and watch people's property get trashed? No, they brought an appropiate amount of force in order to quell the riot. Lucky they didn't fresh with the baton rounds from what I saw on Sky <ok>

    Both sides need to accept each others culture and accept that they have a right to celebrate that culture. Unionists do it with their parades and Nationalists to it with Fleadhs and GAA matches.

    I would like to know what Unionists think about the prospect of the All Ireland Fleadh being in NI in 2013. I suspect they would be in favour of it as it would be a much needed boost to the tourism industry.

    How "clearly wasn't" a small number?
    There are other methods of dealing with rioters, such as those employed by police in Britain. I 'd suggest it reasonable for the police to explore all other avenues to diffuse a situation before using such methods. therefore the use of the term premature is absolutely appropriate.

    What are these alternate methods employed over here in the U.K then?

    Water cannons were absolutely spot on as they rarely injure unless the offender(s) is/are too close to the jet (and that's very unlikely) and secondly, they keep the offenders at a distance. They are the ideal, stand-off, non-lethal weapon to use in a riot.

    the police in britain themselves say it is not a proportionate method.

    It is a weapon. it is dangerous.

    Do you honestly think that if things were reversed that we would be any different? Of course we wouldn't.

    yes, very simply, don't incite one in the first place
    You can achieve this very simply by stopping being a bigot and advising your friends and family to stop being bigots also.

    So it was the police's fault for inciting a riot? All the trouble throughout Northern Ireland and it's the police's fault?
