Liverpool defender Kolo Toure, 34, believes the £32.5m signing of Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, 24, will transform the Reds into serious contenders in the Premier League this season. (Liverpool Echo)

The "mystery" signing Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he will be making this summer looks to be Juventus's 30-year-old Spanish striker Fernando Llorente. (Daily Mirror)

Utd would have to be desperately disappointed if this is the case.

He's ok but not all that. The reason why I think it's not him is his agent is working too hard. He's been linked to real and frankly we all know that's balls so..... I think his agent is using this too.

But if it is...... it's of no real benefit to utd at all. He's not done great at Juventus. He's not that fast either.

And a 90min poll has revealed Liverpool fans would like to see Pedro replace Raheem Sterling rather an youngster Jordan Ibe.
In the vote, 42% of Liverpool fans said they would prefer that the club signed Pedro this summer rather than put their trust in Ibe, who earned 41% of the vote.

I would much rather give Ibe a run in the team. And spend that money on a DM, if we can do that will be happy with this window

    personally.....

it was a complete waste of time doing said poll as its a "look at this shiny marquee signing v look at this kid" type of thing. the plastics etc are always going to pick the shiny expensive option.

The reality is it doesn't matter cos sources say we are not going near pedro nor illaramende so......

if it was 42% pedro 41% ibe thats actually a decent pat on the back for the kid.

my own view is its a shocking indictment of lallana that he was not in there.

He's a brilliant player - but Rodgers personally likes players who have appeared on MOTD so opted for Lallana.

The summer of 2014 will haunt us for years.

That's how you do business. They have been brilliant - from mid table, they're now one of the best teams in Europe.

Seeing teams like At Madrid, Dortmund, Sevilla, Juventus makes me want to cry.

Not with our current management/structure. We're too concerned with scouting players from our own league and insisting paying premiums for them.

  12. Yes, those are good examples that it can be done but don't you think every other club would like to do the same? There are ninety-two league clubs in this country. There are roughly 100 clubs across the five top flight leagues in Europe. Congratulations, you concentrated on four of them <applause>

Without doubt this has happened, but we have reigned it in a bit this summer. Benteke is a **** load of cash yes, but I also think he will be a success.

Clyne was a steal, Gomez looks to be a real gem of a find (he wasn't spotted on MOTD either btw) and we haven't paid over the odds for Ings, Milner etc.

Whether it works out remains to be seen but writing us off before the season starts.... What's the point in even caring with no belief?

The summer of 2012 will haunt you for years but he'll be gone this time next year so there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Because they are examples of succeeding whilst on limited budgets - which is supposedly the reason why we will never compete with the likes of City or Chelsea according to some fans.

Dortmund, At Madrid, Juve have all reached the CL finals and won leagues in RECENT years. They have competed against Bayern, Barca, Real and still came out on top. Yet we lost 6-1 to Stoke because our wage bill is only 5th highest in the league so we have excuses to finish outside of the top 4.

And these teams succeed because they have proper structures in place with a quality First Team Coach who understands how to build from the back.

But by all means, continue to accept mediocrity instead of trying to understand models which our club can use for success. <ok>

  19. Limited budgets? You do realise we've just spent £80m right? <laugh>

Accepting mediocrity and being realistic are two very different things. My point was, you're focusing on the very best outcomes where everything falls into place, something that is very unlikely. possible and no reason we shouldn't aim for that, but very unlikely!

Nor would I advise copying other club strategies, that to me suggests mediocrity. Big clubs find their own way.

Of which, £32m was spent on one average player. We don't need to do that.

And limited is used in context when comparing to the richer clubs - we simply cannot compete, therefore we have to follow their models because they operate in similar environments.

These models work when everything falls into place? It's unlikely?

It's happened to 3-4 teams in 2-3 different leagues so it's hardly unlikely.

So copying a WINNING model is mediocrity? So what do you suggest? We buy superstar players for massive prices and copy the bigger, far superior, and far richer clubs??
