When are the BBC going to show due respect to the small but obviously independent country of Ireland.
We are no longer a member of the British Empire, we are not a British colony but the BBC treat my country men with sustain. Conor McGregor (prick) is not British and young Dunne (golfer) is also not British.
I'm genuinely not being provocative or pendantic but enough is enough.
Too many people died for our independance. Get real BBC, it's 2015.

Fair comment Nuts. To be honest, New Zealand cop it the same as well, with everyone calling any of their stars, Aussies.
You can put it down to lazy journalism.

I wouldn't worry about it Nuts, there won't be a BBC to wind you up soon. Think the Irish are hard done by, they've been oppressing the Tories for decades! As we all know it's a left wing cabal working hard to establish the communist international. Especially Peter "Not Dead Yet" Aliss and John "Viva Syriza" Inverdale. Thank goodness Dave and his mates are working hard to wind it up.

Genuine question, do you pay a licence fee to watch the Beeb over there?

Why isn't Irish TV broadcasting it's own coverage? And if it is, why aren't you watching that?

Good to see you posting again!

PS Did you know that Jordan Speith is British too? It's been a great year for our golfers.

More importantly have we claimed him as an R's fan seeing how his brother works for the club?:emoticon-0148-yes:

Stan, no we don't pay a licence fee to watch the beeb but we do pay a licence fee to part fund RTE, currently €160 per year and no they are not providing any coverage......

A dreadful OP. Very narrow-minded and rabble rousing. These two islands will forever be intrinsically linked and the peoples are pretty much one and the same.

Its not as if they're trying to offend you mate, rather they see the guys as one of their own as they probably do all Irish folk............... which is actually a compliment. If this kind of thing is winding you up then you should go down the shooting range and loose off a few rounds. It might relax you a bit.

(Good to hear from you though Nutsy )

You are correct Swordsy, a dreadful OP.
I bet the majority of British people are supporting Dunne in the golf, just as I was all day yesterday.
Has Nutty got a chip on his shoulder.

You are 100% correct Nuts this has been going on ever since I remember e.g. George Best was always British(which he was!) when he played like a world beater but was often referred to as Irish when pictured drunk somewhere! There are countless times I have seen this happen over the years and it's not just the BBC.

    I understand now.
If an Irish golfer wins the open today, they are British.
If they fall away, they are a drunken Irishman.

I was thinking earlier that we need clearer distinctions of categories of people so we can more easily decide whether we like or hate those in different boxes to ourselves.

To my shame, I tend to favour the Europeans in golf and my favourite used to be Olazabal. I guess I should have remembered the Armada and maintained a respectful disinterest.

Apologies to any Spaniards reading this.

You're almost there, i'll ignore the slur, it really doesn't matter about nationality as it's all about connotations, i.e. when there is positive news the person becomes British/English and if negative news appears they revert back to their country of origin. A good example of this is Kevin Peterson was referred to as Englands captain after making a good score but suddenly was referred to as the South African born England captian was out for a duck!!

Make of it what you want but it happens a lot in all sorts of news items.

I suspect if he wins he'll be a drunken Irishman, quite literally.

There is some truth to the Beeb's selective labeling though. I remember distinctly when David Coulthard used to win a race he was British but when he wrapped his car around a pole one time he was consistently referred to as Scottish!

I actually think its quite funny :)
