He scored a test 100 only two tests ago (more recently than Bell or Ballance). And no opener in county cricket is making a case for his place.

Australia always win the Lords Test, or most of them according to the record books Currently, I'm watching Hants Girls U15 taking on Somerset U15s (aat King's School in Bruton) and these girls are playing with far more discipline than our men's test team.

If there are batting changes, then Bairstow coming into the middle order is most likely (he's been brilliant this season so far). Could be for Bell or Ballance.

Just a hunch .....

Ah can i join your neghead club now please Jasper - even my positivity has evaporated after that shambles ! Must say though full credit to the Aussies, that was an outstanding team performance after being well beaten in Cardiff. Im going to day 3 at Edgebaston so i will be expecting a similar response from our guys. Dont want to see wholesale changes but wud move Root up to 3 where he belongs and poss bring Bairstow in for somebody - Buttler is another who hasnt scored many runs.

Agree 100%. Bairstow was unlucky to miss out on Test selection after doing well in the ODI when he came in for Buttler. Root is the best batsman, so needs to move up the order in place of Ballance. Still not convinced by Lyth, and Bell is out of form, but you don't want to make too many changes at once.

I am still in the happy club . Join Me after we lose / draw the next game . That will not happen ......

Although it may well work, I would be completely against Root moving up to three. He's settled at 5, don't ruin that. We've tried him up the order before - and over the next 6 months he went up and down the order before finally being dropped.

But bringing Bairstow in is a no brainer (if he comes in for Bell, four of our top five would be from Yorkshire!). He's the top runscorer in D1 - despite having played practically half as many innings as his nearest challengers - and is averaging just over 100. Five 100s and three 40s from just 11 innings.

You play your best batsman at 3 and Root is our best batsman atm so for me thats where he should be, not coming in when the team is already in crisis at 30-3 all the time. Bairstow in for Ballance for me and see if Ian Bell can regain his form at his home ground. But the selectors have all the angles to ponder and its easy for us armchair experts !

I am still struggling to know why they all capitulated. Am willing to accept that the Aussies could win, but how could we not score more than that on a batting wicket. Still, it's the ladies today...I'm sure they will do better. They may even have done better against the Australian men's team. :(

Fran .

That for me is also a very worrying issue . What the hell happened between the ears in that last innings ?

That was my NEG HEAD Talking .

The FACT is we lost deliberately to lull them into a false sense of security . we will win the next , lose the one after , win that last , ( with the last ball of the last day ) Anderson taking Johnsons head off .....& win the series 3-2 :)

Honestly , some of you really need to lighten up .........

Sounds like Root will have to move up the order then. So, two wicket keepers in the side, who do we think we are, New Zealand?

England ladies progressing along...104-4 after 25 overs...should be okay if they keep their wickets intact. Interestingly, they've just said that, unlike Australia, England are full professionals. They train at Loughborough and practice against boys sides.
