    Hi fellas,

Suspect most of you know about Terry Bly but just thought some of you might be interested in this piece on him. For anyone who doesn't know, Bly is a former Norwich striker who played for the Canaries from 1956 to 1960 and was prolific in front of goal.

Born in Fincham, he was originally turned down by the club but eventually signed at the age of 21. He had his best season in 1958/59, scoring 29 goals in 32 games as Norwich reached the FA Cup semi-finals.

He left the club in 1960 after injury troubles and in his first season after leaving he scored 52 goals, which still stands as a record in the Football League.

Anyhow, for those of you who are interested, the article is here:

Thanks for that mate a very interesting read, I'm not old enough to remember him (I'm 53), but my Dad who's 86 often eulogizes about him.

What an excellent article. The newspaper headline after we beat the Busby Babes was in fact "Bly, Bly Babes" referring to the two goals he scored in that match.

I just remember him, roseniorhisgranisfromhull, and anyone of my age or older certainly holds him in high regard - A City legend, along with all the others from the ยด59 Cup run. <ok>

What amazes me is that I can name every player in that photo without a second thought but if you showed me a photo of the team ,say, 15 years ago I wouldn't be able to name half of them. It was also interesting to get a glimpse of the ground as it was nearly 60 years ago - brought back memories!!

Just a bit before my time but obviously recognise the name and knew he was a great goalscorer. How kits have changed! No sponosr logos, no manufacturer logos, no names on the back, jumpers for goalposts........

Not sure why we played with only ten men when that photo was taken.

GE I must have seen that picture a thousand times and that's the first time I've noticed that there are only ten players !

It just struck me the difference between then and now. Nowadays it is unusual for a player to stay at one Club for more than 3 or 4 years. I wonder how many appearances that Cup side made in total for our Club? Anyone fancy working it out?

This is really just for us old folks and we have to bear in mind that the current player with most NCFC games under his belt is Wes with 228 and also that there were no subs in the 50's and 60's so there were no appearances off the bench. With Sandy Kennon included that team made between them 2811 appearances for the Club giving an average of 256 per player. Include Ken Nethercott instead of Sandy and the game total rises to 3014 with an average of 274. The records of a couple of individual players surprised me. I knew that Terry Bly was not here very long but I thought he played more than 56 times and I also imagined that Errol Crossan made more than 102 appearances for us. From the reverse side I can remember Roy McCrohan being here for a good while but didn't realise that he made as many as 385 appearances. Just shows how the memory plays tricks.

I always feel Ken Nethercott didn't get the credit he was due for our fabulous cup run! He kept us in the game at Bramhall Lane, keeping Sheffield United out with a dislocated shoulder for the last half hour of the game. He must have been in agony but he didn't let us down!
