One way or another it feels like Saints mucked this one up. Surely all the balls were in our court. Unless Toby really had his heart set on Spurs :) then we just needed to make a decent bid.

As for replacements for him and Morgan I can't see at the moment that we can get better. We did well last year with our signings but for all the talk of the 'black box' how many actually came from Holland and were players that Ron knew?

**** it we move on, halfway through the season I (along with most others) thought our chances of getting him were basically nil. It's only where we given brief hope that some people are losing their heads a bit.

Thanks for the season Toby <ok> Onwards and upwards, CB top priority now with Europa game in 3weeks?

I bear no ill to Toby, he's a good chap and he was very good throughout his time here and also respectful during this saga.

However, as well all know, he was being carried by Fonte. :)

What people need to brace themselves for is if Toby fails at Spurs... we're gonna be getting £50m bids for Fonte next Summer! <yikes>

Think I saw that one...he followec up with a horse one...you can't handle the hoof!
As for the transfer. .. BORING!
sums up everything wrong with transfer window and close season...the media and twitter land come up with bucket loads of ****e...roll on sept 2nd!

One thing I will say is: when a rumour negatively concerns Saints, it almost always comes to fruition somewhere along the line. It seems there is no smoke without fire when it concerns us.

Of course, unlike Clyne and Morgan, he was never actually a Saints player in the first place. So we haven't really lost anything.

And he looks like a twat in that spurssshirt btw.

The evolution of Fonte's defensive partners: Jaidi, Seaborne, Martin, Hooiveld, Yoshida, Lovren, Gardos, Alderweireld - next...?

Who is on ''our list'' do you think? I've seen that Davide Astori is available, not sure if we're interested anymore though. Moreno is a good player, we were linked with him in the MP days. Still not 100% sure we actually want Virgil Van Dyk.

But then, supposedly Alderweireld was perfectly happy... excited even, to come here. Maybe he changed his mind?!?
.

As I've said before on here, everyone is perfectly happy when we're the only club interested in them. It's when one other club fancies them that they want to leave. Funny that no player cares about the rich history of clubs like Forest and Leeds when considering destinations. Yet it seemingly plays such a deciding part in their jump to clubs like Spuds and Liverpool.

Guess it's the single biggest problem of being at the altitude we're at and hoping to sustain. And we have to come up with a way of dealing with it. We are currently the smallest and least desirable (or most desirable if this is a a food chain analogy) of fish in a rarified pond.

Can we not post the images of him from Spurs social media - its heartbreaking!

Toby wouldn't have minded being here, but he'd rather be at Spurs. I suspect it would have been hard to dissuade him, so we'll live with it. He was so versatile he would have been great for us, but he was only involved in one of our great years...we will be fine.

Astori is close to joining Napoli.

What's the point of worrying about it?

No one who is actually considered to be on 'the next level' that we would need wants to play for us, and anyone who plays for us and improves, or seems to improve, wants to leave, so we might as well get used to the fact that we should be looking at players from the Championship and players on the continent that can't get in their sides and hope that they 'come good' [so they can leave in a few seasons].

We can never 'get to the next level' if players who can get us there do not want to be at Southampton FC. We have found our level.

Also that is now two players Ronald Koeman has said thinks will be staying at Saints and they have both left. He should just keep quiet about players.

All those would indeed be great at Liverpool or Spurs the season after next.

I just hope that this doesn't unsettle or frustrate Ron in any way, so that he is more willing to make a move himself now he can touch the glass ceiling. Or hope he doesn't feel frustrated with the club's approach to this Toby situation. Though we know he's a realist and a pragmatist, so hopefully not the case. His ambition must surely outstrip the club fairly soon, though.

Do we even know what our approach was? Journo's don't seem to have much of a clue either.
