Bored of this now, he is going to the Spuds. My prediction is 2 signings from Feyenoord. Clasie will be one and the either Kongolo or Van Beek. If we could get 1 of those 2 CB's, I think all of this thread would be like a distant memory. Both are great prospects, but have a fair amount of experience. Kongolo only 21 and Van Beek 20.
Toby 26, and whilst had a great season for us, and I would have loved for him to sign permanent, he is slightly injury prone for a Centre Back.

Seriously though, I think the key to our "black box" success is not that we find players who no other clubs have heard of and make them amazing, it is that we put in a load of criteria to find players that suit the system the club has chosen to play. The Southampton Way if you like. Lovren was **** for 18 months or so before he joined us, Alderweireld was decent, but nothing special when at Atletico. Both obviously ticked a load of boxes that we want when signing a player (specifically centre back) and both looked far better when playing for us than they did their previous teams, and in Lovren's case his current team aswell.

The big clubs just sign players based on their previous season or reputation, as they can afford to. We have to do more extensive research and specifically find players who we think will fit into the style we play more than anything else. It is why I am of the opinion that we will sign a centre back who will be good whilst playing for us, be it Toby or somebody else.

I'm resigned to not signing Toby...I think I'd even take a 5-yr contract at Spurs, so can't blame him as he has no real link to us. Comes down to how much money we get out of it. I bet everyone in the future reads any contract with Saints closely and pins it to their wall so they can check it every day. Alternatively, I hope Saints keep deals simple.
 
Monk on SaintsWeb has said that we have made contact with Madrid, but no response as of 3pm (as the Sky report suggested). He says Southampton are not giving up, and someone has been working very, very hard today to get a deal done. Guessing he means Reed.
