I guarantee he will go to Spurs anyway, and we will get nothing. Big clubs with money in football can literally do whatever they want.

If toby goes to spurs, wont he have lost a bit of credibility after saying he would like to stay at saints ?

And I don't see why we would not have offered 10m, considering Alderweireld is worth more than that, and prior to July 1 there was a real possibility that AM could buy us out.

In your previous post, you said yourself that we shouldn't be taken advantage of and lay more money than the release cause, so there's a little contradiction to this point now.

I don't agree, and as Schad said, take advantage of me baby!!

Before all this, I was happy paying 18m for Toby, so I hope the club relax their principles here, though I love the fact my club has some, and just sign this fantastic defender.

If it was me, I'd be just saying "Hey Señor, you want 11-12m? Let's do it."

No blame attaches to Toby...he was never our player, so owes us nothing (unlike some others). It would be lovely if he wants to come here, but he has every right to change his mind if another offer comes in that he prefers. However, I will have the highest regard for him and be chuffed to bits if he chooses us.

Toby Timeline

1) Aug-14: Loan with option to buy of £6.8m signed. Clause in contract states Atletico Madrid can cancel buy out option at cost of £1.5m

2) May-15: Season ends with both Toby & Saints keen to make the move permanent(interviews from various sources)

3) June-15: Toby gets married [aww] Still no agreement between Saints and AM. Assumed by many that the £1.5m has been paid and Toby is up for auction.

4) July 1st: Koeman states in pre-season interview that we would still like to make Toby a permanent signing and the player is still keen, but negotiations with AM have been difficult

5) July 3rd: Previous rumours that Toby would be open to joining Spurs gain legs as it emerges Levy is off to Madrid to negotiate a price

6) July 5th 11am: Italian media state Spurs and AM agree fee of circa £12m. Later denied by Belgium journalist as a done deal, but confirmed negotiations are close to a conclusions

7) July 5th 1pm: According to Saints ITK man Monk. Southampton send out negotiating party to Madrid, unhappy at the news of an agreed fee with Spurs.

8) July 5th 6pm: Source of unhappiness is revealed as it emerges that AM have not paid £1.5m buy out clause and deadline has passed meaning agreed fee of £6.8m now stands.

That's a fair summary for those who may have missed stuff.
Plenty of un-answered questions remain. It's not known whether AM just failed to pay buy-out in time or completely failed to communicate intention.
Which team Toby prefers. Neutral reports say he is open to join either side. From his point of view he doesn't know who Atletico are going to agree to sale too, so he is unlikely to completely show his hand until club negotiations are complete.

Koeman press conference at 2:30pm today will be the next likely update

I reckon he'll do one of two things
  • Sign for us
  • Not sign for us.
Definitely one of those two.

Or the middle one.

All we can do is wait and see. All the rest is speculation.

Perhaps we could player share with Spurs....though that has the risk that his game will deteriorate during his time with them. And there could be a suspicious number of own goals against Spurs in games that matter to Saints...though being polite, he will apologise.

I'd be a bit more than chuffed to bits.

There is no greater happiness than chuffed to bits in the English lexicon. It beats 'dog with 2 tails' by at least 10 happiness points.

Chuffed to bits is said when something warm and comforting happens. Someone passes an exam or test, or gets a new job they wanted...I'd be chuffed to bits for them. I was chuffed to bits we hung on for a point at home to Chelsea. This is simply not ecstatic enough an expression concerning the best defender to have played at Saints for a few years. An expletive in it somewhere could have helped, but even then I doubt it covers the emotion.
