Do any of you think we'll make a high end signing from somewhere? I know there will be money tied up with being relegated and paying bonuses etc to the players who stayed put, but aside from Van Dijk I find some the names we're being linked to a tad disappointing for a club in our apparent financial situation. This is in no way disrespecting Dorrans and Mulumbu who I think are brilliant deals.
Have to admit I'm a bit surprised we're after him, wouldn't have thought he'd offer much more than CJ up top
Has his merits but no better than what we've got really. RvW seems destined to move on so maybe their just thinking as a back up option? Unlikely still. I'm still hoping theirs something in the Van Dijk rumours. We've haven't had a really stand out CB in a while. Malky for me was probably the last. Him and Flemming. Bassong maybe but he's obviously had the troubles behind the scenes and the relegation season wasn't exactly great.
Clearly I'm going to be on my own here, but I've always thought Gestede would be a good signing. Yes, he's not going to be ahead of CJ, but £5m for a 20-goal Championship striker (and by minutes on the pitch more than a goal every other game) seems great value for me, plus he's a monster who will always be a real handful, has a much better touch and more pace than, say, Becchio who you might compare him to. He offers something very different to any of our strikers so I don't think comparing him to Jerome is right. It wouldn't be pretty necessarily, but my god can he head the ball (though I don't believe that Blackburn played terrible football with him on the pitch, though I didn't see much so I could be very wrong there). He links up play really quite well and can be relied on to bully defenders (not in a flat track way - he scored against every team in the top eight other than us and Wolves). I'd be happy with us signing him for the £5m or so Watford were supposedly going for.
Didn't realise it was only £5m we were talking about, I'd have thought Blackburn would have wanted double that.
I don't think there's been a figure quoted for us, but it was Watford that were linked for £5m, with Blackburn rumoured to be holding out for £7m
Gestede is a reasonable player, but £5m+ seems a lot to pay for a back-up for Jerome. We already have that in Lafferty, IMO. If we are to bring in another striker, I'd rather it were one who would compete with CJ for the starting place. I feel that Mbokani for the same sort of money would be a better move.
The thing is I don't think £5m is that much for a striker in the PL these days. If anything, I'd say it's small fry. And I'd back us to get a much better return on him than with Becchio or RvW. But you're right - he should really only be brought in if Lafferty is moved on. Frankly I'd rather see Gestede on the end of a corner than Lafferty. But if it's a straight choice between Gestede and Mbokani coming, I'm completely with you Mbokani looks much more exciting, and better quality.
RvW looked exciting and quality on youtube as well we have to get real I suppose, top strikers are way out of reach for the likes of us so we'll always have to gamble. While we're still a member of the EU our scouts should be scouring the continent for young talent, the next Ronaldo is out there somewhere
It's at times like these we need the fountain of all knowledge that is 'Superman wears Grant Holt Pyjamas in Bed'
Some people must be getting very bored. It's funny, I was thinking earlier today just what might be happening with Leroy and then this. I always liked him, but this seems like mere twitterings to me. Perhaps we'll do a swap with Gary O'Neil going back to QPR!
Didn't we already replace him with Odjidja Ofoe? Still quite excited to see this guy play. Hope he has a good pre-season and we see him in action
The idea that Lafferty is back-up to CJ is creditable, but surely this transfer window is all about AN getting in the players HE wants, not working with those he inherited.
