Diesels will eventually be subject to eye-watering charges in Central London when the Ultra-Low Emission Zone comes into force in 2020. There is a sliding scale of time limits depending on the category of diesel engine but they are definitely on their way out. Hybrids are the way forward at present and full electrics will be more popular as their range increases.

Expect many other towns and cities to jump on the ULEZ bandwagon to follow...

I think you may well be right there. Not surprisingly, the dealers are dismissive of any future concerns about diesels.

Saw on the news that Honda (or is it Toyota) have just launched the first commercially available hydrogen fuel cell powered car. Zero emissions, 300km range before a 10 second refuelling (if you can find a hydrogen filling station). All for $60k.

Unfortunately making the fuel cells and storing the fuel uses way more energy than traditionally fuelled cars.

Explain please.

Current cars are all detuned IMO
I am not talking about boy racers
I have a Chip set in my Saab that makes it very powerful but at the same time more economical and runs cleaner
We are governed by what they tell us
Mate just got a new Ford Fiesta based on 70mpg he gets 40
Driving styles IMO make a big difference
If you can get from a2b without the engine working too hard then you will be surprised
In France of course the roads are much better and less crowded over there I drive my Renault on cruise straight from the steering wheel
It's a v6 3.5 and very thirsty in the UK I get double mpg on smooth roads in France and low revs if I need to overtake then it's two clicks on the cruise control and job done
I also only use 98 petrol because the euro is so good and diesel prices have gone up ... Why is that? It was all about mpg and saving the planet
The Diesel engine does not stay clean for long IMO
Most drivers know when their motor is running smooth
I believe modern cars aren't made to last even Mrs DT's BMW M330 has developed severe problems at 90k which can't be fixed because the brain is dead and doesn't manage itself well enough ... Nice car £30k new now worth 4k if she is lucky and it's off the road while BMW spin her story after story
I chipped my SAAB with Maptun changed the exhaust and filters and the turbo is proven same unit as on the Evo know it will get to 200k easily currently it's half that and feels fresh and it's very very quick when I need it because nothing has to work hard

Thanks for that comprehensive answer but I suspect that as far as cars are concerned, I need to just drive it and not mess with what's under the bonnet. Interesting though and I strongly agree about driving styles.

Mrs Nines drives a Honda CRV 2ltr petrol, it's a V Reg and has had it sixteen years from new. It's never given her one problem other than a flat battery in all that time. Can I get her to upgrade it now it's old and outdated? Can I hell, it's her baby and feels she that she can never betray the great service it has given her.

When I worked for a company that used the Prius I had to use a hire vehicle following an accident and the manager of the hire company said they are the most reliable vehicle they'd ever run in a fleet. They also did around 55 mpg around town, shame they are such an ugly model.

The Prius + is a better and more spacious version. If you prefer straight petrol engines then the CRV is an excellent choice as others testify on here...
