Just because a member of the committee was against it and one found it a less-than-ideal short-term solution doesn't mean that the club didn't rate him. It means that the the rest of the committee rated him (!) and one person rated him enough to prefer to buy him as a short-term solution than to not buy him at all.

This is quite possible. Last time we brought in Sturridge and it turned out alright. This time we bought Balotelli and it really didn't.

If it was only one member of the committee then fair enough although if that one had been me then there is no way I'd have changed my mind! I'm quite flexible and willing to listen to most things but nothing was ever going to convince me signing Mario was a good thing. Nothing!

We signed Studge in the the January window, five months after Carroll had left. In terms of fitting into the team he was never that big a risk either, his style of play was always going to fit in and his record showed he can score goals. The risk was injury which wasn't half as bad as its been since he joined annoyingly.

Balotelli had a reputation for being a lazy ****er on the pitch and a mardy ****er off it too. Despite only being 24yrs old, he'd been at four different clubs prior to joining us and bar the first minor transfer fee, his value had deteriorated with every move.

Fair enough, but that's your personal opinion of the palyer (and more or less mine), but the committee member may have been anti, but not as anti.

I think you're downplaying the risk with Sturridge as well. He was known for his injuries, and you yourself criticised his selfishness on severla oocassions. There was definately the possibility of it not working out.

I agree with gerrez.

This is the thing - what is our style? Fans associate us with being fast, pressing, dynamic but are we really that? Does Rodgers want that? We only played that style for half a season when Rodgers went to a diamond.

And Sturridge was not a Rodgers player. He was the committees. Again, I think there is a clash of styles/personalities within the committee.

He had injuries but they weren't as much a problem as they are now (which I did say in my last comment). I did (and continue to) criticise Studge because of the velcro on his boots, that was never part of the risk though, they is more a dislike to his approach / style. Of course, it could piss teammates off which could be deemed a risk, in fact it did annoy Suarez a time or two if I remember rightly but so did everything else <laugh>

good point but one thing is for sure, whatever the style is Mario doesn't fit it!

completely ignoring your second point!

Before this season his injuries were about what I expected. This season has obviously been horrendous, and there was always the potential for it to happen.

With the selfishness, the risk was more that he wouldn't fit into the team and/or be too wasteful to be a truly effective striker at a top 4 club (which is our aim). He'd shown potential on his loan moves but was yet to do it consistently and a lot of people were uncertain about the transfer at the time. Happily, it all turned out great, at least for the first 18 months.

I for one distinctly remember rodgers gushing his pants on jan 1 when he arrived and was so happy.

I mean is it any wonder this club is where it is when we choose a mid table manager and then fill it with players who have only ever excelled at lower level clubs.

Are people forgetting that we had a midfield of Alonso, Mascherano and Gerrard but are now content with Henderson and Milner?

We had Agger and Hyypia, but players like Skrtel are heralded. Jon Flanagan is lauded as the Scouse Cafu when we had the likes of Finnan and Arbeloa.

We had Robbie Keane as a back up striker and we think Lambert and Ings are good options.

Like I said, is it any reason why this team is in this mess?
Although I might be in danger of being seen as Jimmy's "Bitch"....I once again agree with you JS about this...^^^^^^

Didn't we sign Mascherano from West Ham (ignoring third party technicalities)...? Xabi Alonso was at Real Sociedad who were probably equivalent to West Ham at the time. Agger, Hyypia and Skrtel all came from poor leagues and were considered to be risks that could easily have back fired. Steve Finnan played conference football and nobody knew who Arbeloa was when we signed him.
