Toure brings experience, enthusiasm and leadership, and I would sooner have him over Skrtel. One of the few players that won't hide when things are tough.
Very serious - Skrtel seems to evade criticism every season. Last season, he was rubbish but our attack masked all our issues. This season, he's been alongside Lovren who is even worse. When Kolo makes a mistake, it's more visible - i.e. an own goal, or a dodgy pass. Skrtel's error are hard to see, especially if you have little understanding of the game i.e. positioning, timing, concentration.
But that's not saying I want Toure as a starting defender. I want him as back up with a new RCB, and sell Skrtel.
I wouldn't say Skrtel is worse than you're but neither are brilliant first choice. Nothing against keeping toure for one more year, he seems to be a jolly fella so probably good to have round the place.
Shearer on MOTD - 'All that money spent and Skrtel is still there best defender'. Analyses one of Stokes goals where Skrtel avoids the challenge but blames Sakho for giving the ball away and making it to difficult for Skrtel. Your point is proven.
Skrtel gets plenty of criticism and makes plenty of mistakes - but he's still our second best defender and, for that reason, shouldn't be the first one out the door unless we can get a decent fee and sign a top replacement. I'd sooner get 70k a week Toure off the books and resign Skrtel to bench backup with a new RCB brought in. Bring in Klopp and Hummels please... I don't buy the whole old experience stuff. No one will listen to or respect an older experienced player who makes ****ups of his own under pressure whilst telling the young players how to handle pressure!
Skrtel does not get the criticism he deserves, that's for sure. I agree with you on experience - the older players have let us down this season, and giving Henderson captaincy is madness. Do you think Sterling would listen to someone like Suarez or Henderson ... ?
Who else would you make captain? Henderson at least has a decent record and is a mainstay in the team. The players than him are either too **** or don't play enough and those younger are either too **** or too young/inexperienced. Last choice is to sign someone and make them captain which risks unsettling the squad...
They are unsettled anyway. It's too late Rodgers is in and him and his **** free taker henderson are here to stay. I think personally there is not much leadership in this group so really you are looking at some signing taking the job at some point in next 2 years
Lallana is a bottler, no way I would have him as captain. Sakho or Can are the only two candidates - personally, I rather buy a leader.
We will be making maybe 2 big signings, but make one of them club captain straight away? Not sure about that. I'm happy with Hendo as captain, good experience, middle of the park, vice this season etc.
Yep, because we need real leaders. Henderson doesn't possess any leadership qualities IMO - bottles it in the big matches and lacks spark/quality for players to respect him. Goes missing in games quite often and doesn't have the ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck. It could all change next season when he's not playing alongside Gerrard. He could be captain but he's certainly not ready for it yet.
He's had a better win rate as captain this season than Gerrard... You (and I) could well argue that it's simply because a midfield without Gerrard is just better overall since it can now run, but regardless, he's got more results than Gerrard - even if he didn't grab the all important goals. He's not the ideal pick, but he's not terrible.
I'd never agree to a new signing being made captain. A captain should be settled, he should have to earn the armband and his teammates respect and he should know the club too.
