Yeah stats like that are completely irrelevant. It also shows how far we have to go if we want to be considered a serious challenger for the top 4. Everyone has been talking about how **** Liverpool have been this year and how great we are yet they still most likely will finish above us, just shows how far we still have to go.

Indeed and with FFP and CL prize money doubling next year the words 'hitting glass ceiling' comes to mind.

We have more than no hope. :)

It means absolutely nothing unless we finish above them. It's where you are when you cross the finish line that counts.

Indeed. The season is 38 games, not 20. At the end of it all, Liverpool gave been better than us this season.

Not that that should stop Rodgers' comments about us from making him look like an idiot. Although never wanting to be accused of bias, I will also point that Merson was only five points off his 20 point mid season prediction between us and Arsenal.

Yes and no. The PL money is also going up, and the marginal benefit of that additional money (though a lower dollar figure) might spur more mid-table clubs on. A gulf in purchasing power has opened -- and continues to widen -- between the PL and other leagues...clubs such as ours may not be able to compete for the top tier of players, but increasingly we'll see teams (potentially including ourselves) studded with stars from the continent taking on the elite crust of teams laden with superstars. And a team of stars built and marshaled well can overtake a team of superstars assembled haphazardly.

Let's assess this.

Southampton finished 7th and Ron receives plaudits and a nomination for manager of the season.

Liverpool finished 6th and Brenda is derided and suggested he's likely to lose his job.

Football is sometimes about performance against expectation, actually it is most likely always performance against expectation. Nah, Liverpool weren't better than us this season, they just finished one place higher in the table.

"That's. Just. The. Way. It. Works."

Also Rodgers has spent tens of millions of pounds, and Koeman hasnt...

Brendan Rodgers: "Look at Tottenham. If you spend more than £100 million, you expect to be challenging for the league."

The man is a complete tool and I'm so happy that he's been found out.

I only hope he's not been fully found out yet. I mean I really hope he doesn't lose his job before the season starts!!!

I take great exception to this. As a keen DIYer I object strongly to my workaday equipment being compared to a man who shows all the awareness of a dead frog.

Come again? Forster, pelle, tadic, mane and Bertrand are 50 million combined....

Where you talking net over all of Brendan's tenure

That £50 million was accrued by selling most of our first team. Or had you forgotten?

The above quote from Brendan sums it up. With the money he has spent, he should be much closer to the top four. I hope they keep him on so badly

I meant no offense to your hardware equipment Lambo and retract my statement. That said I feel a propped up shovel with a face doodled onto it would indeed be a worthy adversary of old mate Rodgers.

We improved our position by one place, which given the summer we had, is a remarkable acheivement.

Liverpool, having invested heavily in their squad following the loss of Suarez, dropped from second down to sixth. That, I would suggest, is unacceptable to their fans and owners.
I'm a bit gutted that we weren't able to finish above Rodgers' team, but I'll take comfort from their perceived failure. Life's all about perceptions.

And don't forget that teams like Spurs and Liverpool could be presumed to be adding to an already strong squad. They should be adding the cherry to the cake, while we are still making the cake. And yet only a few points between us.
