I'd consider parking at Altrincham (pay and display) or Navigation Road (free but limited spaces) car parks and get the Metro. Get an Ashton train and it goes direct to Eastlands / Etihad Campus.
Trams will be crowded on the way back, but probably quicker than queueing in a car to the M60 or round to the M602. Altincham's only 15 minutes off the M6, and you'll probably pass anyone trying to do the journey by car.
Depends whether you want to sit or stand in the tram for a while, or sit in the car for a while longer!
