The mines (75% I believe) were making huge losses and the country could not afford to subsidise them any longer. I also suspect had the unions not been so greedy, there may have been a different outcome. I agree it was a sad thing to do however it would have happened eventually anyway. Underground mining is far more costly than open pit!

Not sure about that QWOP. Thatcher and Scargill turned into a personal battle he could never win. She turned into a vendetta and, through vindictiveness, wiped the region out. It wasn`t just the pits, it was the shipyards and everything that went with it.
