Mistake was made, defence went to sleep - team game ...some short memories here 01.19 01.30 12.00 24.00 24.35 25.41 and, don't forget, sometimes the late late show goes the other way 28.00
Sorry "Seagull" got answer that. @12mins he tracks the ball all the way from the free kick and pushes it out for a corner. The camera shows that his view is not obstructed at all. @24mins he doesn't get beaten at his near post. To be expected really. Not saying he's crap, far from it. Just prone to mistakes that costs us. We have a young eager McCarthy who chose us over Liverpool, lets give him a game eh? Taller, younger and not prone to as many mistakes. Will be first choice next year so why wait? In the spirit of saying sorry to everyone, sorry to Kiwi for wrongly naming you. I feel terrible.
You know what a few weeks ago I posted McCarthy in my line up instead of Green; and a few went along with me. I also criticised Green for Sundays blunder....but if I was picking the team for the rest of the season I would still have him as my No 1. Firstly the guy is a great character and is strong - he will bounce back from this. Secondly despite not coming out of his box enough he does boss the defence very well at corners and other set pieces and I think we will all agree that if you take the season as a whole the four in front of him have not exactly covered themselves in glory? And lastly McCarthy himself. Bottom line is that he has played 2 games and conceded 6 goals. Did nothing wrong against Liverpool, but against Sheff U he was uncertain at the very least (and am being polite). I agree he should be next seasons No 1 whatever divison we are in (still hoping) but what we all need to do now is get right behind Green - it will mean a lot to him and who knows there may be one or two great saves left in him that may keep us up.
@12 mins he still has to be aware that any touch, through a crowd of players needs a reaction - how many times have you seen those go in because the keeper hesitates and is then left stranded as the ball goes in at the far post @24 mins the save at the post resulted in a dislocated/fractured a finger... he played on for the remainder of the game tbh these are details to illustrate the point that but for Green we might not be where we are... the save against Wigan at 0-1 down? at 0-2 can anyone say we would have pulled that one back? Keepers make mistakes - players make mistakes - if no-one made a mistake the only goals would be worldies - they are few and far between and the game would be poorer for that. From the moment Hazard had the ball and was shepherded out on the wing 1 on 1 with Isla we seemed to have things covered, but we let Oscar run free to receive the ball and lay it back into Hazard - from there no-one seemed keen to put in a challenge, probably for fear of giving away a penalty. Green's mistake led to the attack - the goal however, was a result of poor defending - no-one is arguing that the poor clearance wasn't contributory - clearly the attack wouldn't have happened without the kick, but we should and could have cleared the ball and we didn't - we had enough players back to deal with the situation and we failed to cope... Onouha and Caulker track back, but Caulker failing to realise the danger slowly jogs as opposed to Onouha who make a real effort to get back and cover. Hazard was allowed to turn and face up Isla and lay the ball off, look at the video... Isla had Hazard out on the touchline, could he have done more to ensure he didn't release the ball (someone else said he should have flattened him and taken one for the team) Hazard turns and gets the ball to Oscar, could Barton have done better to cut out the pass? Oscar (this one is criminal and is the crux of the matter) was allowed to run completely unopposed to support Hazard thus bypassing Isla and Barton (and resulting in allowing Hazard to get into the box where no-one wants to make a tackle) Henry fails to get closer to Oscar making it easy to return the ball to Hazard Barton stops to watch Phillips, jogging back, is simply ball watching and does not once look to see who is coming until when he eventually glances to his right it is inevitably too late (watch at 1.15 from the reverse angle). As Fabregas fires the ball in, there are 8 players plus Green in our box to their 4 (not including Fabregas) - with a ratio of 2 to 1 - we should have dealt with it and in my opinion we had the opportunities to deal with it. Happy to disagree.
This is getting to be like the inquest into the JFK assassination. The film above and seagulls breakdown of events is the equivalent of the zapruder film! Every goal we concede could be defended better, who knows if greens kick has been good it could still have been headed straight back into the danger zone and we could have still gone on and conceded. It was a poor kick, he knows, we know it and the players know it.
Agree with most of what you've said, and agree that Green was outstanding last year, but why signed McCarthy and then not play him. We started the season with a small squad and 2 GK's ok Murphy isn't premier level so why is he here? after the fiasco with the other Salad and the fan's want for youth it seems a natural fit to get him involved. Esecially as Greens 'form' has dropped. The operative word being 'form' Greens is bad and we have a good number 2, I think if we want a eager and keen McCarthy for where ever we end up next season we should give him a game. Chelsea had 1 shot and scored. How many time have we heard that about the teams we've played this year? too bloody many...... Not anti Green, but his form is shocking. Asking McCarthy to play in the championship when Green is finishing the year badly doesn't sound like good man managment. I've been wrong before.
Funny, green makes a mistake, we must get rid of him! Don't see many mentioning Clint Hill's stupid challenge that gave Villa the free kick that robbed us of 3 points, why? Why do our fans need a scapegoat to blame all the time?
I been putting Mccarthy in my team for next week every now and then because while Green has saved us some games, his all round performances are often not good. I know little about McCarthy but I'm surprised he has hardly featured as I hear he is very highly rated and would have thought giving him a few games would be good for him and give Green needed real competition. Also if Mccarthy is good why will he want to stay with us another season?
Think that was answered with the form argument. not 1 mistake, a collective back catalogue of errors some stranger than others. Clint doesn't play enough to have any. No one is tweeting hate towards Rob Green, were just discussing options for the next match. I would suggest some knitting or maybe a long walk in the country if the standard of debate is getting you down. Relegated and promoted with every club he's played at, it's a justified debate. I won't forget the mistake where he once tried to defend a corner by standing inside the goal. **correction he palmed it into the goal while have a cuddle with a WBA striker.** He's always had a habit for bad mistakes, awareness is not his strong suit: One mistake, more like a lifetime. If you check my post history I've been calling for the change since new year.
Good summary Seagullhoop - watching it again, despite Green's awful kick, our defence should have still dealt with it, with Isla committing himself to a strong tackle over at the touch-line for a throw-in or foul.
Spot on - we are where we are because we make mistakes - but a mistake does not equal a goal. Goalkeepers are more visible than outfield players in these situations so they tend to get more criticism - in this instance I think it's evident that despite the mistake there was ample opportunity to clear the ball - leads me to feel there was a shared responsibility... QED
I counter with the observation that you did not include a McCarthy Horror show. I did find this, really think he's worth a look:
I was a hockey goalkeeper in my yoff, so I know about these things and so I can berate Green......because I never ever made mistakes.!! ...................................well if you don't count that one in the County Final when we had been pressing their goal for 70 solid minutes, and I had cleaned the mud out of my studs a couple of hundreds times and in the last minute of time, the ball was randomly knocked out into our half, and as I had nothing to do for the whole match I went out to retrieve it to pass it back with my stick,....Screwed the pass, and their centre forward run through and scored in an open and very empty net. ...well if you discount that little mistake!!!!
The real fault lies with one of the outfield players leaving Fabregas unmarked on the edge of the area. Asking for trouble. Although, Jose may now think twice before making an offer for Green
He's only young... plenty of time for a hatful of howlers! He will be No1 next season and for the foreseeable future when Green has moved across the Hammersmith Road - only time will tell if it's Charlton, Chelsea or (god forbid) Chester in the Conference!
