Head Coach Chris Ramsey ‘heartened’ with QPR's second-half comeback at Villa Park ...
Rangers looked to be heading for a potentially crushing defeat after Christian Benteke’s first-half double overturned Matt Phillips’ early opener.
Ramsey’s side were much-improved after the break, though, with goals from Clint Hill and Charlie Austin restoring the R’s lead before Benteke’s third meant honours finished even at the end of a pulsating 90 minutes at Villa Park.
“It was a good game,” Ramsey told www.qpr.co.uk. “We got overrun a bit in the first half. We caused our own problems, our technique was poor, we gave the ball away a lot and we rode our luck.
“But in the second half I thought we were fantastic and gave the travelling fans something to cheer about.
“All credit to them.”
After providing the perfect start through Phillips’ seventh-minute opener, Ramsey admits he was disappointed to surrender the lead so easily.
“We wouldn’t like to give away three goals in the manner that we did,” he added. “The goals [QPR conceded] were schoolboy errors.
“We scored, we were on top and then we make a mistake with a basic pass and suddenly they’ve scored.”
The draw keeps the R’s hopes of top flight survival alive, boosted by four points on the road in as many days fresh from Saturday’s 4-1 win at West Bromwich Albion.
Ramsey, though, was disappointed not to return from the West Midlands with all six ahead of Sunday’s local derby with leaders Chelsea.
He admitted: “We would have loved to have won the game and then it would have been everything to fight for. We’re still in the battle but it would have made our life a lot easier.
“If you looked before the fixtures, would we have taken four points? We probably would have. Based on our second half performance, though, we’re disappointed we haven’t come away with all six.
“What’s heartening for us is that we’ve performed really well. We’ve shown that we do have the ability to survive.
“I feel the players are capable of surviving and everybody around the club shares the same belief.”
