John Barnes claims he is struggling to get a job in management because he is black. The former Liverpool star’s last managerial job was at Tranmere Rovers in 2009. He lasted four months before being sacked. The 51-year-old has previously been in charge of Celtic and the Jamaica national team.
Barnes insisted that, had he been white, he would have got another job. “A white manager loses his job and gets another job, he loses his job, he gets another job. Very few black managers can lose their job and get another job,” he said on John Barnes: Sports Life Stories, to be broadcast on ITV4 on Tuesday.

I know this has been discussed before but a new programme about Barnes is to be aired tomorrow in which he claims the above.

Does he have a point?

BS, it's because he's a **** manager!

Twenty-nine games in charge of Celtic and he managed to lose eight of them! EIGHT! With a team equivalent to at least mid-table PL side in a League One standard division.

Stats say otherwise <whistle> .... I know how you love stats <ok>

He's an absolute disgrace coming out with the race card when the reality is he made an absolute dogs arse of being a manager at both Celtic and Tranmere.

He got the opportunity to manage one of the biggest clubs in the UK ffs. Shameful, the deluded ****wit

Sounds a bit racist from Barnes. Just bcos you're black doesn't mean you're a **** manager John <whistle>

Anyway listened to him during the Suarez debacle and he's a hypocrite so fck him <ok>

Couldn't agree more. Very surprised he's said this considering his previous comments and arguments on race.

I usually complete agree with his views on racism but this claim is ridiculous and doesn't fit in with how he normally is at all.

Ofcourse you would, you're a Livpl fan lol. But whether you agree with his views on Suarez or not, you can't argue that he is a hypocrite on the race issue considering what he's come out with before, and is now when it comes to something personal to him.

Nothing to do with being a Liverpool fan, I don't agree with anything Lawro or Redknapp say for example. I just usually like what he says, he doesn't see it in the same way as most. He says focusing on race is indirect racism, something I usually say; ie, why bring colour into it in the first place? John's comments there are ****ing disgraceful IMO

I just used stats for his time at Celtic, my mrs (nm) could have done a better job <laugh>

He did well with Jamaica though.
I think 3 of his losses with Celtic were in cups where anything can happen and usually does. It's not the worst set of stats for a fledgling manager either.

Why did he only last 29 games before being sacked then? <laugh>

Why does anyone?

Because they're not good enough. If they are then they don't get sacked usually, there is always the exception such as Adkins at Southampton but that wasn't the case for Barnse at Celtic, was was just ****. If I remember correctly, Kenny took the reigns after Barnse left and they immediately improved.

in fariness celetic were dirt then and rangers were in ascendancy but that can only account for a few games lost not 8..

all in all i felt barnes screwed his own career by not having the right coaching experience and badges to take on a big job.........jsut like tony adams did too.

its not really about race digger... its cos you jumped the queue due to your name.....

I think you've both taken the headline as being a quote from Barnes himself, it isn't.

If you read the article he says - “A white manager loses his job and gets another job, he loses his job, he gets another job. Very few black managers can lose their job and get another job. What I can judge it from is by looking at society. How many black people are there in the higher echelons of any industry? We can talk about journalism, we can talk about politics. So why should football be any different?” - that's not racist at all, it's an honest observation.

Barnes was their manager during the 1999-2000 season. Celtic won the league in 1997-98 & 2000-01, so two seasons before and the season after but they were dirt <laugh> Even if they were dirt, they'd were still miles better than all but one side in the league!

Why does anyone?
Because they're crap.

He'd lost the dressing room and got the chop after an embarrassing home defeat to Inverness in the cup.

He pulled the race card out to try and explain away his sacking a year or 2 after as well, he's delusional.

They didn't improve actually when Dalglish took over: '' Kenny Dalglish stepped in as interim boss and it was more of the same underwhelming performances to the end of the season'' [taken from Celtic wiki].

But the point surely isn't how well he did in 3 short stints but the fact he didn't get another job when others with similar or worse records did and have.
