Saw The Theory of Everything. Was really good (7.5 or 8/10) and the way Redmayne contorts himself to become Hawking is amazing, can't have been easy to do. Not much science in it - it's more about his marriage and illness but the book it's based on was written by his wife - but the insight into his personal life is pretty compelling.

Saw it in the cinema, I too was expecting the science but quickly realised that wasn't what the film was about. It was the story of the ALS and how over time it affected their marriage from her POV. Think alot of people seeing it for the first time are expecting it to be science and the motor-neuron progression.
I enjoyed it, as you say Redmayne nails the Hawking role, mannerisms, ticks, expressions and attitude all spot on. I actually thought Felicity Jones was the best though, she holds the film together and is really rather good.

The Theory of Everything is a good film no doubt but it just lacked that something that makes a great film. I think I rated it at about 7.2/10 and did really enjoy it.

On this note rate this years Oscar films? Top 5 of you have seen that many.

    Mine......

    The Grand Budapest Hotel
    Whiplash
    The Imitation Game
    The Theory of Everything
    Foxcatcher

Haven't seen the big winner Birdman yet but have seen most others.

Its good, but not great. Wouldn't have picked it over the others as a film. Its a bit too 'insider' Hollywood vs Broadway and at times all over the place. Its biggest draw back was the constant ****ing Drumming (jazz drumming) soundtrack, which not only got annoying very fast but also drowned out some of the dialogue.

The acting is great though, Keaton and Norton especially.

She is excellent I agree and actually all the acting is. Harry Lloyd as Brian his room-mate in college for example who puts him on the statue <laugh>, Maxine Peake as Elaine and Charlie Cox as Jonathan.

Gonz I see what you mean, it was really good but I was waiting for that revelatory moment and it didn't really come. Lots of very cool little moments but nothing that elevated it to greatness, just a very good biopic. I did like how they used spirals and black holes as visual metaphors for the relationship as well as the physics.

I haven't seen Birdman, Selma, or Grand Budapest Hotel. Out of the others (best film nominees only) I'd rate them as follows:

    1 Whiplash
    2 Imitation Game
3= Boyhood / Theory of Everything
    5. American Sniper

Luv - I'm on episode 7 of season 1 of house of cards, and it's ****ing brilliant.

Perfect combination of dark and intelligent - Spacey is awesome, and I truly expect him to get a lot darker!

You're right there. It gets better as it goes on and the character development is brilliant, loads of surprises yet and some jaw dropping moments that you wouldn't expect.

    I'm on Ep 8 Season 3.

I find it hard to separate them, I don't have a fav season at all and find them all of a similar quality.

Not at all, the journey and the determination of Frank is still there to see and from episode 1 of that season we start to understand just how driven he is. (that's as much as I can say without spoilers). The main story is more complicated and you have to really pay attention with all the twists but when it all fits into place it's brilliant.

    Luvgonzos Guide to legal TV

So after recent events I've been looking into what I can watch legally.

Sky - I already have a Sky subscription so have started using the On Demand features more.
Netflix - Fairly cheap and no long term subscriptions with some and I mean some good stuff on there.

    Netflix TV Series highlights.
    House Of Cards
    The Bridge
    Fargo
    House
    Top of The Lake

4OD - Loads of free TV on here and some good stuff.....
    The 100
    Top Boy
    Any Human Heart
    Falling Apart
    Buried

So overall I'm quite pleased that after some digging about I've got a **** load of good TV available.

The downside will be the films, the ability to get the new release will be missed but I'm hoping that the TV series will get me through to genuine release.
