Giving up international football at the age of 33 isn't doing it for your club, its doing it because you've had your day. If he was doing it for Liverpool he'd have done it a year or two earlier but he didn't want to miss out on the world cup (fair enough IMO).
Sorry if this has been posted already. But Hendo has every right imo to turn down 80K, he's been vice captain and grown so much as a player he deserves more (sounds mad as 80k a week is a shed load of cash!). But he is so important to our team that we need to keep him. Gerrard/Johnson and probably a few others will clear enough money to give Hendo a minimum of 100k a week easily. I understand how it looks from a fans view, but the bigger picture is his agent and Hendo know full well he's worth more than 80K. To be honest offering him that much is a bit of a pisstake, considering the shift he puts in week in week out. He's also one of the players that trains the hardest and is a good role model for young players coming through. Keep him, even if it's 120k imo.
He said once the LA story broke that he gave up England duty to lengthen his club career. He thought that gave the club a clear message and he was disappointed they didn't respond a lot sooner with contract talks. It does look like he's spit his dummy over it but I'd have thought he would have had talks with the club about his future and giving up England etc. before he took the step and actually retired from England and just expecting the club to somehow know what his plans were. He needed to know their plans for him and made sure they dovetailed with what he had in mind.
I know he said that but it was too late in the day IMO, players give up international football to benefit their club football much earlier than 33yrs of age normally. Shearer was a early one at 29 but Carragher and Scholes were both around 31 I believe.
Gerrard had to wait to be made captain until 2012 - age 31 otherwise SG may have retired earlier but for his ambition to make captain. As you say others usually do it around the 31 mark. Shearer was 26 when he was made captain, so could afford to go early having 'made it'.
He was never the permanent captain until 31 but he'd been captain plenty of times including the previous international tournament when Terry was under racial investigation and Rio refused to play alongside Terry.
Yeh true. I just saw him as wanting it permanent before retiring, showing ambition, which is a good thing.
Perhaps he has. But the other piece of the thread was whether we've missed a trick letting his contract run down? He now has ALL of the power. I bet he'd have accepted £80k a year ago. Looks like bad management to me tbh.
Saw this today - http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/562246/Jordan-Henderson-Barcelona-move - unbelievable!
Couple of interesting points from the article: 1. However, the Catalan giants would have to wait until the January window to enter pre-contract talks as they are under a transfer embargo. 2. It is thought that Barcelona have had scouts at Liverpool games but it is not clear whether or not they watching Henderson. Who else could they be after
Although he never said what the Sky Sports article suggests there is obviously an element of truth to the story. http://www1.skysports.com/football/...erpool-after-only-being-offered-one-year-deal If LFC give into him its a case of the tail wagging the dog, he's only a journeyman squad player and at his age if he's not happy with a 1 year deal on decent wages he should be ****ed off pronto.
He hasn't featured much has he but is a decent squad player, I think a one year deal is a great option for him at his age. I really don't like all these dealings being out in the open, if nothing else it makes you make assumptions about a players attitude which may be a long way off the mark and just journo sensationalism.
I see your point jb but reading between the lines he's using us as a stepping stone while he concentrates on his coaching badges, he should be totally concentrating on the club paying his wages. Like his brother he sees himself as more important than his club see him.
I think Carra did his coaching badges while still playing for us didn't he and then decided to not rush into it and do some tv work instead. I haven't seen any stories about Kolo like I have about Yaya, they seem a lot different to each other tbh - remember Birthdaygate
I'd give 100K to Hendo and sell Sterling, he's not worth 80K, I'd prefer to make £25M off of him, and bring another one of his clones through from the academy.
