My thoughts exactly.
I understand the general public's obsession with the talented underachiever, helped by the general media Liverpool love in, but it's not like we were expected to applaud similar players like Kevin Phillips, Le Tissier, Fowler or Zola.
He made his choice to stick with his club instead of moving to a better one, fair enough. But I don't think he needs a round of applause for doing so.

Slippy sticking with a small club out of misguided "loyalty" and not fulfilling his potential. He was just too scared to move out of his bigfishinasmallpond world just in case he got found out. That he was really a big mackerel next to the sharks of the footballing world.

Tbh I wouldn't expect anyone to applaud a player from a rival club, no matter how long serving. It's not like Giggs or Scholes made themselves paupers or missed out on any trophies by sticking with Utd for their entire career.
I definitely have respect for Gerrard, Terry etc for sticking with their clubs and not moving to greener pastures during difficult periods. But respect alone doesn't deserve special recognition imo, otherwise there'd be a round of applause for at least three or four players in every game.
To be fair the Chelsea players applauded the United players at Stamford Bridge a few seasons ago. Richardson, Lee, DONG!
