....Already we`ve got more options for a defensive spine than I can remember as it stands So no chance of spineless performances next year we hope If SB comes on and says the immortal words "Defensively we were shocking" next year, he should be shoving his shreddies into his case while hes saying it ....GK /CH/CMF....there`s millions of them ....just putting those on paper you could go on and on it seems...and the final one, the big daddy of a FO centre forward is hopefully just round the corner....
Buying and blending the boys at the sharp end where the goals go in however is another thing...One of the lads last week said something like "We shouldnt buy XXX `cos he`ll try and be top dog and spoil things for Gyan"....just a bit of a paraphrase there...nothing nasty intended...Anyway came across this piece after Johnny Crossan had bee signed for Cloughie......Crossans words.....fantastic....

As a fifteen year old, I worked for Youngs garage, Roker avenue, and they used to sponsor SAFC footballers cars, and my job amongst others was fitting the number plates, and I always remember Johnny Crossans, WBR 500 I fitted them to his Ford Capri, not the ones most of you folk have had, but same as the ford Classic, but coupe, this was about 1963, the engine if I remember was 1500, and the colour British Racing Green. I believe the number plate belonged to Youngs, but He had the plate as long as he played for Sunderland. have saved your thread into favourites, for use at a later date, thanks for the memories.

I was back home the other week alternator belt went (Ford).......pulling my hair out as i had to travel back that day......looking for garages to do it "now".....various friends ...trying to help....Im sure Youngs was one of them....but they were struggling...so I had to go to Boldon in the end....I know what its like to be "away" Bill ....half lines bring back memories...

thats why you got the golden biscuits.

Alas Youngs has not been a garage for over thirty years, is now a retail park I believe.

Change ....Change ....Change .......sorry.... I think this place was further down Roker Avenue ( I left in `73 just after the cup final)....anyway as the old saying goes "The more things change the more they stay the same.....still got players trying to make their mark....lets hope we can find some diamonds like Johnny Crossan and Brian Clough......I once saw Charlie Hurley get out of his car and swing his door closed......Big car with gear stick on the steering column.....everything was in slow motion like a Sam peckinpah movie....I didnt speak for a week.....

Think he got the Zodiak with column change, dont remember the plate though, actually It might have been the zephyr 6, minds not the best these days, but Crossan was always was a fav of mine. always had time for folks, would wander round the garage talking to the car cleaners, mechanics etc, good bloke.

Must be great memories Bill....ijust remember him being great/hard/crisp passer...intelligent....somebody to be proud of
What was the difference Bill? I thought a Zephyr was a Zodiac? Im sure youre right by the way ....anyway when the door "clunked" I fancied the car wobbled a fraction...then he took his shoulders and a massive smile into a wet fish shop in the middle of Sunderland.......God he was huge! Ha Ha!
 
There were two cars the Zephyr 6 and the Zephyr Zodiac. My dad had a Zodiac. Spectacular looking car with white wall tyres. Half grey, half blue. Wonderful car. He had it from the 50's until the 70's when it finally gave up the ghost. They don't make cars like that any more.
