Spoke to work colleague today who left early and missed the winner
No obvious reason, he just wanted to get away to miss traffic. No work, no appointment, no party to go to.
he may not be representative though as he's definitely a premier league tourist
Anyway I pissed myself and told him he deserved all he got (or didn't get)

I had to meet the wife and kids at a restaurant in beverley and promised I would leave early to miss the traffic, I stayed till the final whistle sat in my car in gridlock on Walton street for an hour and turned up at the restaurant 40 mins late. But it was worth it !
People leave at all clubs if they are getting well beaten. But we have people leaving in droves if we are drawing and pressing for a winner or one down and hoping for an equaliser. Even when we beat Liverpool for the first time in our history by the time the players looked round there were thousands of empty seats whereas at other clubs there would have been mass celebrations. Admittedly for some reason it has improved a little this season but still too many are shuffling out well before the end. As for Sunderland, the numbers of supporters they have, especially for away matches where they have to set off well before we fo and get bak far later, puts us to shame.
Sorry mate but 3/4 of the ground leaving just because you're getting beat is dire. You can't defend it.

It was literally jaw droppingly embarrassing, so whilst they might travel in numbers they need to address what happens at the SOL if that was anything to go by.
And they were very, very quiet.

I know a Sunderland fan and he bemoans what the SOL is like compared to Roker Park rather like a lot of us do with the KC compared to Boothferry Park. They have had problems with over and felicitous stewards and banning orders. A Wednesday fan goes in my local and he would rather go to away matches now as you get people there who want to get behind the team and not just sit there. If you went to Wednesday when they had the open Kop end you will know hat an atmosphere they created. No nonsense about the poor acoustics caused by the roof height or design, they didn't have one. But they created a great atmosphere compared to now.
I don't think I would have become so attracted to City and followed them through thick and thin, mainly thin, for over 50 years if my first experience had been now compared what it was like when I first started going.

I accept there were many bleak, quiet games, and hindsight tends to ignore them but the decision makers now seem to be people who experienced those days second hand, if at all. Either that or based on youtube clips of teams that choreograph 'support'.
Terrace banter used to be almost an art form. Atmosphere needs to be nurtured, so it can develop organically, not practiced mid-week with little relationship to events on the pitch or reaction to opposition chants.
