This would seem to fit with Chunky's recruitment policy.

Marseille have released a statement to the French media in which they confirmed that they can’t do anything about their star forward Andre Ayew leaving the club. The Ghana international has been linked with a move to Newcastle United in the past few weeks and his representatives have been holding talks with the Premier League side.
Le10 Sport have reported on comments a Marseille spokesperson said with regards to the future of Ayew at the French club. They said it will take a large salary offer to keep the Ghanaian at the club, but they still plan to hold discussions with him as planned. Marseille still see Ayew as being a key member of the Marseille team but they believe now they can’t do anything to stop the player leaving when his contract expires in June.
“It is absolutely right to expect to achieve a high level of remuneration. We will have a discussion with him, because he is very important to us. But we can't do anything,” said a spokesperson for Marseille.
Last week we covered the story that Newcastle had been in talks with Ayew over a possible move in the summer. These discussions will have been centred round his personal terms because he will be a free agent when his contract expires. In the past few years Marseille have put in place a strict wage policy and therefore are not prepared to meet Ayew’s wage demands or his club teammate Andre-Pierre Gignac. Last weekend the player said he wouldn’t take a wage cut to remain with Marseille but Premier League sides like Newcastle would be able to offer him the salary he feels he needs at this stage of his career.

He is a cracking player. I watched a lot of him when Joey was there, he stood out a mile and was MOTM most weeks. I doubt we are alone in pursuit of him!

Do you think with all the money we have we would offer him our top earner spot? Getting Jonas, MYM, and Ben arfa off the books probably opened up 150k a week. I think Ayew will be another gomis situation. Asking for a huge salary because there is no transfer fee. That being said i would take him in a heart beat.

We should have signed him 12 or 18 months ago but better late than never. Unfortunately there will be a bidding war and that will mean that we probably won't get him, instead deciding to stick with Sammy on a new 6 year deal and Obertan of course.
