Got a couple of mates who did the US,Mexico, carry on south deal over there. They actually stopped in Guatemala longer than
any other country because of the friendly nature of the people. You do have to watch yourself though, plenty of planning etc.

You probably won't agree Red but IMO your daughter will learn more about life in a year over there than she ever will doing some degree.
Having said that, and as a father,I can fully understand your concerns. <ok>

In principle, I'm not totally against it. However, I very much want her to finish her degree before she ****s off doing anything like that. Plus, there are much less potentially dangerous places to do it.

Apparently there are fake taxis and shuttle services at the airport. Beware.
Guns are carried by many for safety.
You can't trust official soures for info as most are influenced by who owns what hotels, many hotels are owned by foreign folk so they invariably gives these Zones safer ratings when the opposite may be true.

Foreign officials don't get danger payments for working in the country.

They have an exit tax <laugh> Well maybe, might be done away with by now, a tax on leaving the country <laugh>

I find it good, my stubble is very thick and I often get ingrowing hairs on my chisled chin, could that be the razor?

RHC - Cant she go to Blackpool for the weekend? Or a week in Skeggy? Kids nowdays. I understand your worry, there has been some good advice given, in a few (the very distant future) years I may be posting something similar

RHC tell her to finish uni, she'd be stupid to interrupt it for a year and might not go back. Can always go travelling in a year's time as she'll still be young and Guatemala will still be there. This bloke she's seeing might not be though, how serious is there relationship and have you met / do you trust him?? It's only a year to wait too.

If I'd had the chance to go to uni I'd not be binning it off for some third world **** hole. I didn't even finish school cos I sacked it off all the time so have **** all in the way of qualifications, be a waste of time if she ended up with no degree eeven if they're worth as much as a couple of sheets of bog roll these days.

Time to be Dad and the voice of sense, but in a non aggressive / emotional way. Also would you be expected to stump up some funds for this trip?? If so then that's an extra bargaining chip / strengthens your hand

Guatemala is dangerous for locals let alone foreigners. Crime isn't the same as it is in the UK - your daughter has no idea what Latin America is like. People leave there as refugees. It is a beautiful place with beautiful people but she will be in for a massive shock.

My best friend growing up was Guatemalan and he spoke of the dirt floor his family lived on. He told us about the gangs that ran the villages, the corruption of the officials, and the danger his family faced daily.

In Central America, the drug trade is massive. Paramilitary organizations roam the country looking for quick ways to make a buck - your non Spanish speaking daughter is a prime target for kidnapping. Places like Guatemala and Honduras are midpoints on the drug smuggling routes towards the south. My girlfriend is Argentine and even there, one of the most developed nations in L.A, she's afraid to take me out of fear I will be killed/targeted for being a fish out of water.

That being said its not as bad as other places. Its not a Brazilian favela nor is it Mexican cartel territory. If she has protection and plans accordingly she may be able to enjoy it for a short while.

I don't mean to scare you but she needs to find this out the easy way from you and people who know a thing or two. It might be alright for a quick holiday in a gated resort but its no place for someone to live, especially coming from a reasonably safe country like England.

Another thing, the UK doesn't have much gun crime. Sure there are incidents and its not quite Norway, but that is a big one everywhere in South and Central America.

  14. No idea but every Wilkinson Sword I've tried (about three) has got clogged up with each and every stroke. Spend more time trying to dislodge the hairs from between the blades than actual shaving. I will say though, the Wilkinson Sword feels better to shave with, the rotating head is brilliant too. Just quite annoying when it constantly clogs up, especially when you shave your head as well as the face. I use a Gillete Fushion and never get that problem. quick wiggle in water and its cleared instantly every time.

The cost of blades is ridiculous though and I refuse to use cheap versions on my head, so easy to rip your skin open on your head. I never use a brand new blade on my head. Always use the new blade on my face first, once I've used it a few times I'll use it on my head.

    so......... comments

    1. this is a snap decision based on chasing a man not here own aspirations? would you say she would never have gone to such a place if not for him?

    2. if its chasing him.... then is he a johnny come lately you have not learned his name yet or is he the real deal... not to her to you, her sister etc..... will they fall out after 3 months and he leaves her to fend for herself?

    3. is this a travel to one place OR is this lets tour round? you do see this being lets go through columbia... lets go to peru... where the danger is much higher?

My view is if someone has not shown interest before in travel suddenly is all for going its for a bad reason especially when uni is affected.

however it i a great learning by all accounts
