Wow gandy, I didn't know you were a professional footballer! You must be nearly old enough to play for QPR 
I AM ancient, that's not what we are discussing here, is it? One of your most stupid posts (and the competition is fierce!).
My point is that at 32 next month, he's hardly a newbie in footballing terms, and historically, he's not been great. Sure, he's having a good season, good luck to him.
Incidentally, I follow many of the Irish players in the English league, and it's nice to see Daryl enjoying himself. Shame it's with such a long-ball team, but whilst he's scoring, I don't suppose he's worried.
Dear me I've just read through all of the posts on this thread and to say that the thread is pointless in the extreme is arguably the understatement of the year, to compare Murphy to Holt in my opinion is frankly quite laughable.
As an aside, it's also quite funny how the Binmen are right up themselves at the moment because for the first time in God knows how many years they have spent the majority of the season above us in the League. Enjoy it while it lasts fellas

Some might have been but not me mate, it was always going to be a big ask returning to the top flight at the first attempt. McNally is revered by many but he must also be made accountable for two of the biggest **** ups in NCFC history, namely waiting far, far too long to give Hughton the boot and secondly appointing Adams when he did. McNally and the board were wholly responsible for our relegation IMO but I'm sure there will be those who will argue that black is white

It's been a rough weekend on here for JWM, he has surpassed himself in the talking bollox stakes in the last 24 hours or so.
Does Murphy do more than just put the ball in the net? Holt was everywhere for us. He'd run the channels, hold the ball up, bring players into the game, scare defences. He brought a lot of attention on himself which meant the rest of the team had more space and time to play. That's what made him great in my opinion. I don't watch enough of Ippy to know how much Murphy does.
This is not even a debating matter.
Murphy is having an excellent season because a good manager is playing a well organised team to perfectly suit his strengths.
Holt is/was a much more rounded player, bigger contribution. Superior in just about every technical attribute too. The only way in which Murphy is better is in being the striker in a Mick McCarthy team. MM did the same with Ebanks-Blake in the Championship for Wolves and Marcus Stewart (brings back memories eh Binners?) for Sunderland. Say what you like about McCarthy, he does a very good job at getting the most out of players. Whole is greater than the sum of its parts, etc. it's what makes him successful at Championship level, but always doomed to ultimately fail at Prem level - you need a touch more genius.

I wish most budgies would look at some of murphs goals this season, they would see a huge amount have been from winning the ball from wide, cutting in and scoring across the keeper.

Murphy has surprised me this season and Guru is right - he has scored some special goals. Let's be honest, without him Ipswich would be in mid table - they rely heavily on him, so you would have to say he too is their talisman.
He strikes me as one of those players, like Holt, who needed a club where he felt settled and he's finally got that. He's not as good as Holt was in his prime though. Ipswich fans talk his ability down but he was one of the best players in the Premier League in our first season up, scored some wonderful, skilful goals and talk of England was not ridiculous. He was playing well enough to be included and under a ballsier manager would have been.

I would say Holt was a cleverer player than Murph, Holt would know how and when to win free kicks, Murph will keep going and try his best (sometimes at our own cost) to stay on his feet.
That's not a slight at Holt, just a general observation.
That is what annoys me the most about you lot when you say Holt was 'clever'. That is not why Holt was clever. Holt was clever in the same way Teddy Sheringham was clever. He used his brain on the pitch. Many thought he was a big lump and although he could do the physical stuff, it was his footballing brain which made him a top player for those couple of years. Again, Ipswich fans don't like to give Holt credit because of what he did for us but he was a much, much better footballer in every way than Daryl Murphy is. Nothing against him, as I say, he's having a great season - but Holt was a class act who combined leadership, skill and goals for a sustained spell in the top division. Had he been 27 rather than 31 when he peaked, he'd have been playing for England.
You're certainly right about one thing Rob! Holty is a definitely more Rounded!
