Haha exaggerating obviously chaps but I do think it's a massive factor, for example with this incident, sure Mane has the keeper and defender's encroaching but all he has to do is maneouvre some kind of shot goalwards however tame and awkward it may be and it's an empty net. I mean Jay scored a goal sitting on his arse last year! Easier said than done for Sadio to score and would understand a ref deciding it's not a clear goalscoring opportunity in the heat of the moment amidst the scramble, but think it's outright daft for a review board to claim to have the certainty to overturn the decision and pretty inconsistent when they're meant to not want to 're-referee' games. Really though I think from a common sense point of view personally a goalkeeper deliberately diving on and handling a ball outside his area whilst battling with a player has to be a red, it just doesn't make sense to me not being one.
Does make me think though, say a keeper's up for a corner and it gets cleared, bit of bouncing around but it ends up at the feet of a player just around 10 yards inside his own half, goalkeepers still only half way inside his own half and there's a player on the halfway line so he can't run it the whole way for a 1on1 but he's not close enough to block anything, as he winds up to have a go, a player commits the classic 'tactical foul' and clearly and deliberately trips him up from behind. Clear goalscoring opportunity or no?

Having watched it back a couple of times again I do think Mane pushes Adrian from behind. Probably doesn't cause him to go down in the manner he did and dive on the ball, but can see why it has been over turned. Adrian fouled Mane previously though, which should have been a red and a pen.

Is it a red card every time? Outfield players get a yellow (if anything) if they handball where they are not stopping a goal scoring opportunity....though admittedly usually accidently...falling on a ball etc.

No it's not. If the keeper handled outside the box but there were defenders behind him it would be a yellow card as it would not be a clear goal scoring opportunity Or if it was near the goal line where the angle was too acute for a clear shot at goal. It has to be a CLEAR GOAL SCORING OPPORTUNITY for a red card. I thought Mane had a clear opportunity because he could have either gone round Adrian or chipped it over him had he not handled the ball.
If that's the rule, I don't agree with it.
Outfield players sure, but if a GK does it, no matter the situation, it should be a red. Just my opinion on it.
In this situation, and judging on what you've said above, it was still a goal scoring opporunity, so the red should still have stood.
Sorry, but your opinion is completely flawed. You can't send a keeper off for handling it outside his area when there is very little goal scoring opportunities.
Doesn't really matter to us, does it? Except it may have been better it they hadn't gone to 10 men....though we will never know.
And there I think's the shame Fran. In retrospect if he hadn't gone they could have subbed Carrol and the game would have been more open. I truly believe we could have won it then. There isn't a team in the prem that finds it easy to score against a 9 man defence if they are of prem standard, working hard together and a bit lucky. The perceived injustice of the sending off can tend to galvanise a team too.
Look at our defending against Chelsea.
If a keeper handles outside his box he is going to be stopping a goalscoring opportunity 99% of the time. There would have to be at least two defenders between the keeper and the goal for him to have a chance of getting away with it. Even then, none of them can use their hands to stop a shot. The only reason this red should have been overturned is if they deemed Mane to have fouled Adrian. If the FA think he didn't stop a goal scoring opportunity then they are clueless.
Presumably it is technically possible for a keeper to be dismissed for handling inside the area, if there is a back pass which he picks up to stop an attacker scoring. Has this ever happened?
Normally, yes, but surely if the ball is, say, rolling towards the goal line and the keeper dives on it, that is denying a goal scoring opportunity isn't it?
This is where mind reading comes into it. The GK cannot pick up a deliberate back pass, but not every ball put back towards a GK by his own player would be called a back pass. So you could argue that a ball aimlessly going towards the goal line is not a back pass. It would come down to interpretation by the ref.
