With injuries to Dunne and Austin now might be the chance to try a different formation which more suits the attacking players who are fit. how about this?...

------------------------Green-----------------------

--Isla-----Onuoha--------Caulker-------YSY--

-----------Barton---Taarabt---Henry------------

----------------Vargas--------Zarate--------------

------------------------Zamora----------------------

There has to be an element of risk as we need to win so Isla and YSY would need to push on when necessary and Barton and Henry are disciplined enough to drop into the space behind them when they go forward. Adel would be the playmaker and now would be the chance for him to show his range of passing. Any thoughts?...

I would go with this with the options of Sandro (if fit) to Replace Henry if and when he tires,Zamora for Zarate if we need to hold the ball up, with the final option of possibly Krancjar for Adel later in the game.
With Charlie possibly out for the season we in reality dont need wingers as such because without Zamora in the line up we dont have a recognised centre forward who can use his head to win balls in the area, whereas with this formation we have 3 playing forward who have the capability of running directly at defences causing them problems in areas where free kicks leading to shots on goal could be crucial, thus leading to Hoillett being included as he also causes defences to back peddle and on a good day he can also score goals when he cuts inside.

Waiting to get shot down, be called an idiot by the usual suspects, to be told my football knowledge can fit on the back of a stamp still leaving room to lick it etc, etc , etc.

It's a Tuesday night in Sunderland in February so what fight there is in the team needs to be on the pitch. No room for ponces which rules out a large chunk of the squad.

Green
Isla Caulker Hill Yun
Phillips Henry Barton Taarabt
Zarate Vargas

Tell them to not defend like tarts and get the ball into the feet of the front two and the wingers rather than Barton playing Hail Mary passes all night.

McCarthy
Isla Ehmer Caulker Yun
Phillips Sandro Barton
SWP
Vargas Zarate

Well......why not?

------------------McCarthy---------
--------Caulker -------Rio ------ Clint
Phillips -- Barton --Adel -- Sandro----Hoilett
-------- Vargas ------OBZ

With Henry for Sandro if he's still not fit. Zarate, Isla, Green, Traore and Yun among the subs.

I was thinking we have been so bad it was time to try 3 5 2 again. The Injuries at the back yesterday make that almost necessary.

Agree Watford, but the left side worries me, Yun still not 100%, and while Tubs performance was encouraging, we would be very exposed.

Dont really know if there are any viable alternatives

With Ned out it looks like Rio will be back in the fold especially if YSY is still out, our squad is so thin some of the kids may get a chance before too long...

It really depends if you consider Hoilett, Traore or Fer viable.

They aren't.

So no Austin, Dunne or Ned. To be honest I am more upset at the loss of Dunne and Ned than Charlie...for all our whinging we have replacements for Charlie, but none for two CBs

Correct me if I am wrong...It has to be the dream partnership of two of Rio, Clint or Caulker.

Would Ramsey play Donadlson or Sendles-White...no

I cannot think which two I would play ...Clint (because he cares) and Caulker because he has played on a winning team (Rio has not).

A nightmare awaiting to happen...I will be hiding behind the sofa on Tuesday

Actually I think this looks ok. I would just pull Vargas to the right though and go 4-4-1-1.

Ah, but in the distressingly unrefined circumstances to which you refer, is there not a case for plumping for all that is most elegant, refined and artistic to disconcert the local oafs as they blunder brutishly about? The subtly provocative tactics of tarts - providing that they have hearts - should not be discarded unconsidered. And surely calling on the intercession of the Blessed Virgin must at least be worth keeping in the back pocket?
