I am prepared for some people scrambling for a knife to cut my tongue out here...but I wouldn't be distraught if we missed out on Mills (under the premise that the below scenario is feisable).
Yes, I do think he is a very good player, but if I was given the option of us signing Mills or getting Vitor and Mee on loan; I would taken the latter.
I think we are all anxious with regard to the CB situation; as it stands - Bamba; the jury is definitely still out for me, Tunchev; I'm not sure if he is going to make it to be honest and that leaves one good, steady Championship defender in St Ledger. For me though, our main issue last year was the balance in the defence and communicative frailties that sometimes existed between the two CBs. I think we all would agree that in the latter part of the season, the best partnership was Mee and Vitor; which was helped by the balance of having a left and right footed CB (with Bamba, St Ledger and Tunch (?) as back up).
With Mee and Vitor we also have automatic cover for the full back positions, and it goes without saying, that to bring them in on loan would free up 4 or 5 mill otherwise spent on Mills, to contribute towards two attacking players in an out and out striker (i.e. Maynard) and an attacking forward who can play within a pronged attack Gallagher style (i.e. Whittingham).
Don't get me wrong, Mills would be a very good signing, but a) I guess i'm just trying to soften the blow if we miss out on him and b) looking at the bigger picture; perhaps a more balanced and tested (albeit with less developed players) partnership in Mee and Vitor is a more exciting prospect.
Obviously Mills and Mee is a possible answer, but we then need to look at bringing in another RB for cover.
Just some food for thought really.
