BEN ANDERSON: "Lots of work still going on at McLaren. Bodywork is still off the car so it's not coming out any time soon, it seems." #F1

I wasn't sure what to make of Nasr's topping the timesheet yesterday, especially given Sauber's Ferrari-like tendency to grandstand in the tests, but I'm impressed by Felipe's modesty when asked, claiming it was the soft tyres wot done it. I do hope he can come good for Sauber though, Ericsson hasn't been very impressive in his career so far. And I hope those laps times lure a few more sponsors for them too.

Sounds larrvely. Louder too. Does that mean they are recovering less of that exhaust energy though?

Hamilton's Mercedes has stopped in the middle of the chicane. Seems to have spun, no idea if due to driver error or car issues.

This disrupted running must be really frustrating for Kvyat, not only does he have to step up to the top level quickly, but he doesn't even have a proper chance to get the miles under his belt.

Engines do sound much better. Now if only the TV coverage can capture the engine sound it will be great.

    McLaren still not particularly fast.

With the electronics issues they have had, is it possible they will have turned off some of the energy recovery units etc so that they can at least try and get some mileage onto the engine?

Would explain slow top speed and mediocre lap times.

It is an agressive design by McLaren and I think there are positive signs of progress during the test, especially when you think where they have come from.

I remember their Octopus exhaust of a few years back which they trialled and couldnt quite land, at least the skinny design doesnt seem to be overheating and that most of their issues are fairly simple operational ones, which as a brand new engine provider with what they say is brand new technology, is not a surprise. You get the impression they are turning up the wick slowly and are not rushing. And to be fair, knocking in a 1.27 when you were spluttering around on days one and two isnt as bad as first glance, is it?

I suppose Barcelona will reveal a bit more of the aero pecking order so Ferrari will get tested much harder. I suspect Mercedes and Williams to show glimpses there.

Will be interesting to see if Ferrari can maintain pace at that type of track and to find out of Williams have come up with an improved car through corners.
