You clearly have not idea how the Americans <doh>form their surnames and place names following their colonization. You do know the USA is a 'new country' don't you? It's not hard to trace it back.<doh>

George sunderland…<confused> <cool>

The Washington family name was inherited from the name of the property of which the family assumed ownership in 1183. The Ancestor of George Washington who assumed ownership of the lands of Washington was William de Hertburn.

Is that you can do laugh? That's your input?

William de Hertburn who was heir to the lands at Offerton? Eldest son of Sir Patrick Fitz Dolfin Raby from stockton, County Durham?

Sir William fitz Patrick de Hertburn. The eldest son of Sir Patrick fitz Dolfin Raby he was born about 1150 in Hertburn, near Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, and died about 1194. Upon his first marriage he gained lands at Stockton-on-Tees. His second marriage was to his kinswoman Marjory (Margaret) de Huntingdon, Countess of Richmond. She was also born around 1150 and this was her third marriage.Countess Margaret was sister to William the Lion, King of Scotland, and Malcolm IV the Maiden King of Scotland. Her father was Henry, Earl of Northumberland and Huntingdon and her paternal grandfather was David I, the Saint King of Scotland. Her youngest brother, David Earl of Huntingdon, was the ancestor of the de Bruce and Balliol families.Sir William and Countess Margaret shared the same Great-great-great-great Grandparents; Beatrix, Queen of Scotland and Crinan the Thane. The Washington family name was acquired in 1183 when William fitz Patrick de Hertburn assumed tenancy of the Washington lands from the Bishop of Durham at a cost of four ponds per year. It was to his advantage to accept Washington in exchange for his Stockton lands since he was already heir to the lands at Offerton, which lie just across the River Wear from Washington. It was upon his acquisition of the Washington lands in 1183 that Sir William fitz Patrick de Hertburn became William de Wessynton I.

Well i've learnt something new today

Of course it can go back further to when we were colonised, we are a nation of cross breeds just like the yanks, but we don't need to, the connection to our area is well and truly established. People with a nordic or Scottish heritage would need to go back further to establish their connection, we only need to trace it back to this area. I don't know what planet Humbles is on. <laugh>

"You clearly have not idea how the Americans"…<doh>

Well done, so they were using the name Washington hundreds of years before they ever heard of America…:emoticon-0126-nerd:

That's my whole point, they get their names from their ancestors who originate from different counties, the USA is new country. <doh> You were questioning the ancestral connection originally too. double<doh>

Earth to Humbles.

Haven't you got a rock to crawl back under now you've made a tit of yourself?

Here's a good summery of the Washinton line before the surname Washington came into play. Goes further back than our area of course.

George Washington, the First President of the United States of America, was descended from William de Wessington I.

What a great fact, as stated cements our links with dc united, love it, wonder if they'll come over for a friendly? And vice versa, can see us going to the states like, maybe play toronto aswell

Yanks love this ancestor connection stuff, they'll embrace us like brothers if we reciprocate, and you know how friendly our visiting fans are. We're so gearing up to an American tour like. Get another English club on board and we can have a mini Tournament, us, DC, Toronto(conditions of the Defoe deal reported) and another. Our visiting fans on this tour should trigger a very close relationship with DC. Short could well be a genius for piecing the historic connection and bringing it into the modern day with this partnership.

The tournament idea is a great one, and could very easily meet with success.

There is already one happening in the summer here, which covers the entire country. Big name teams, with big name players. The tournament covers the entire country and guys like me eat it up. Get to see Ronaldo, Pirlo, etc etc. I'm aware that you all know the EPL is popular here, but the scale might astonish a few. It's getting really ****ing big. So big, there is a consensus it is holding the MLS back, because numbnuts like me are following English teams instead of our own. I've been on 606 and Not606 for eight years, but couldn't name more than five players from the San Jose Earhquakes, the local club.

So, plenty of room for another tourney, and integrating MLS would have to be key.

Playing up the historic connection would not only work, it's pure genius. Send a note of to Maggie pronto. I'll get it started on this end.

Will you take an interest in DC Untited? I'm going to. Fully intended to follow MLS this season due it's growing popularity. Now I have a team to get behind so will watch their games as I'm always up in the early hours.

You know what? Never considered it till just now. Hell yes, sounds fun, and it's about time tbh.

Also going to Earthquake games this year. A group of us have all decided to make the effort. Lots of daft English ****ers live in my town, we've been friends for over 25 years, they're all in as well.

Earthquakes new stadium opens in the summer and it looks canny. Supposedly, they have biggest bar of any footy stadium anywhere. Behind goal, as wide as the pitch. That will easily be enough incentive to get our group to attend!

You going to follow Earthquakes? I'm following DC me like. We'll have to set up MLS thread.
